Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
In this on going course, learners will begin practice phonemic awareness skills and phonics with letter sounds and letters. Students will be introduced the letter sounds and letters of the alphabet with an emphasis on the sounds the letter symbol makes. In order to read, the importance is the sound of the letter, not the naming of the letter. Each class will begin with a chant of all letter sounds. Students will be introduced to specific sounds each week. Using letter symbol cues and pictures, students will practice the sound. We will use play dough for 2 days to make the letter symbol and practice the sound. Writing Strokes will be taught 2 days each week. A worksheet is provided for the student to support the play dough activity, pictures with beginning sound practice, and hand writing practice. Students will be exposed to oral language practice for phonemic awareness (recognition and play with sounds), fine motor skills to increase writing ability, and beginning phonics skills to read short vowel words. Digital books will be used for exposure to sounds in print, as well as teacher modeling reading for the students. ***Students may join any week, the way the curriculum is structured, it does not build on previous weeks.*** This is a great class for students with no experience with letters and sounds. It is also a great review for those heading to kindergarten or first grade.****

***In order for me to assist your child while reading, I do require cameras to be turned on during class. I need to be able to see their mouths and how they are forming the sounds in words.***

Learning Goals
Students will learn the letter sounds, as well as practice writing the letter symbol. Each lesson will incorporate phonemic awareness exercises for beginning sounds, fine motor skills with play dough to build hand muscles, and written practice of the letter symbols. Students will be introduced how to combine the sounds learned to read words. Students do not need any letter sound knowledge to be successful in this class.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
This class is appropriate for learners who have had no exposure to letters and sounds, as well as learners who need review or support with letter sounds. This class must have two learners attend. If there are not two learners 24 hours before class begins, I will message you with the time options for another section. Parental Guidance: Learners will need a can of dough or soft modeling clay to use to make letters. Please make sure your learner has a dough that is appropriate for use. Some dough/clay may contain wheat, which could cause an allergic reaction if ingested in those sensitive to wheat gluten or with Celiac disease.
Supply List
A two-page handout will be sent before each session.
Students will need:
One can of play dough
One marker (I have found markers to work best, as then I can see the writing when students share.)
One dry erase board with marker, and eraser
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
