What's included

3 hrs 40 mins in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Each week, students will complete photography assignments to practice in various locations and conditions outside of our live class. At the beginning of every session, we’ll dedicate time for learners to share their photos taken during the week. Homework images can be uploaded to the Outschool classroom before class or shared via webcam during the live Zoom session. Learners will receive constructive feedback on all images presented in class, helping them improve their skills and creativity.

If your learner requires any grading options, please reach out with any specific criteria and we are happy to provide grades when needed for our students.

US Grade 9 - 12
Unlock your child’s creativity with our Creative Photography Series, designed to introduce students to the essential skills of photography! In this foundational course, students will learn to thoughtfully consider their subject, lighting, and composition to capture stunning photographs.
 
Throughout this engaging class, students will:

- Explore Key Concepts: We will cover fundamental photography principles, including composition techniques, the importance of lighting, and how to effectively frame a subject. 

- Hands-On Learning: Students are encouraged to share their own photographs during class. Most share by holding their images up to the webcam, fostering a collaborative environment where learners can provide and receive feedback. 

- Interactive Format: Classes will include a blend of engaging discussions and interactive activities such as photo challenges and games. Expect to see demonstrations that illustrate key concepts, along with slide presentations to visually support our lessons. 

Created by Erika Hatfield, an experienced photographer with a passion for teaching, the class will emphasize a nurturing and encouraging atmosphere. Erika or Aaron will facilitate meaningful interactions, allowing learners to ask questions and share their creative ideas. 

Expect plenty of opportunities for interaction, whether through sharing photos, asking questions, or participating in group discussions. Our goal for every section is to foster a friendly space where all students feel comfortable sharing their work and receiving constructive feedback.

CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES
This class is the first in a comprehensive series aimed at building photography skills over time. It consists of three levels:

- Level 1: 4 Weeks
- Level 2: 6 Weeks
- Level 3: 8 Weeks

Altogether, this series comprises an 18-week semester course designed to provide a robust photography education. 

Level 4 and 5 classes coming soon in 2025! 

Formats Available  
All courses are offered in both live Zoom sessions and self-paced formats, catering to a wide age range: 6-10 years, 10-13 years, and 13-18 years.

Lesson 1:
Subjects
 In this introductory lesson, students will explore various subjects to photograph, learning how to choose and frame them to make their images pop. Through hands-on exercises, they will practice techniques to highlight the uniqueness of each subject.

Lighting
 This lesson focuses on the importance of lighting in photography. Students will experiment with different lighting conditions, such as natural light, shadows, and artificial sources, to understand how lighting affects the mood and quality of their images.

Composition
 Learners will dive into the principles of composition, including the rule of thirds, leading lines, and framing. Through practical challenges, they will apply these rules to create visually compelling photographs, enhancing their storytelling through imagery.
