Homework
1-2 hours per week. In this self-paced photography course, students will complete weekly photography assignments to practice in different locations and conditions beyond the video lessons. To facilitate feedback, it is best for learners to post their images under classroom posts rather than sending them as messages. Each photo shared will receive constructive feedback, helping students enhance their skills and foster their creativity.

Beginner - Advanced Level
Unlock your child’s creativity with our Self-Paced Creative Photography Series, designed to introduce essential photography skills! In this foundational course, students will learn to thoughtfully consider their subject, lighting, and composition to capture stunning photographs at their own pace.

Throughout this engaging course, students will:

- Explore Key Concepts: Cover fundamental photography principles, including composition techniques, lighting importance, and effective framing of subjects through informative videos.
  
- Hands-On Learning: Students are encouraged to share their photographs in the Outschool classroom. They can submit their images for personalized feedback from Erika Hatfield, fostering a supportive learning environment.

- Interactive Format: While there are no live Zoom sessions, students can engage with pre-recorded demonstrations that illustrate key concepts, alongside visual presentations that enhance understanding. Learners will pause to take photos while watching video lessons. 

Led by Erika Hatfield, an experienced photographer with a passion for teaching, this class emphasizes a nurturing atmosphere. Learners will have the opportunity to ask questions and receive guidance tailored to their individual progress.

This self-paced format caters to diverse schedules and allows students to learn at their own speed while still benefiting from dedicated teacher interaction.

CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES 

This class is the first in a comprehensive series aimed at building photography skills over time. It consists of three levels:

- Level 1: 4 Weeks
- Level 2: 6 Weeks
- Level 3: 8 Weeks

Together, these levels create an 18-week semester course designed to build comprehensive photography skills. 

Levels 4 and 5 will be available in 2025!

Formats Available
All courses are offered in both live Zoom sessions and self-paced formats, catering to a wide age range: 6-10 years, 10-13 years, and 13-18 years.

Lesson 1:
Subjects
 In this introductory lesson, students will explore various subjects to photograph, learning how to choose and frame them to make their images pop. Through hands-on exercises, they will practice techniques to highlight the uniqueness of each subject.

Lighting
 This lesson focuses on the importance of lighting in photography. Students will experiment with different lighting conditions, such as natural light, shadows, and artificial sources, to understand how lighting affects the mood and quality of their images.

Lesson 3:
Composition
 Learners will dive into the principles of composition, including the rule of thirds, leading lines, and framing. Through practical challenges, they will apply these rules to create visually compelling photographs, enhancing their storytelling through imagery. 
Lesson 4:
Creativity
 In the final lesson, students will synthesize their knowledge of subjects, lighting, and composition to create imaginative photographs. They will be encouraged to think outside the box, experimenting with their style and expressing their unique perspectives through their work.

Learning Needs
With a Master's in Special Education, Erika designs our courses to support diverse learners. Our hands-on, interactive lessons foster engagement, and we are open to accommodating any specific needs to ensure to ensure success.
Parental Guidance
Some learners may need assistance with finding the best way for them to share their images. In the past learners have needed adult help with uploading photos from their cameras or other device or even logging into Outschool on the device that they use to take photos. Others share by making a video where they show the back of their camera or phone. Please reach out if you need any help getting your photos into the Outschool classroom.
