Class Experience

Students will have opportunities to:
•	Discuss how different audiences require different word choices and writing styles
•	Participate in collaborative discussions
•	Analyze and evaluate different topics for effectiveness in a letter to future self
•	Write informative/explanatory text (including compare and contrast statements)
•	Introduce a claim (prediction) and use evidence to support the claim
•	Turn off their inner editors and write freely
The homework for this class will be to finish writing the Letter to Self, sign and seal it, keep it safe for five years, and then open and read it. I'll be assigning letter grades in 2025. Just kidding. But I do love hearing back from students who have done this assignment. They say it is a monumental experience. I can tell you from experience that the longer the letter winds up being, the more it means to the student when they finally open it. Both happy and sad tears are usually shed.

I also double dog dare challenge you to write a Letter to Self for yourself. It's amazing, even as an adult, to see how you and the things around you change.
Paper and pencil/pen for taking notes and starting the writing project are all that is needed for class. If you need to use something other than paper to write, feel free to bring whatever you need!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
I will avoid sensitive topics, but because students will be discussing topics from their own lives about which they may write, sensitive topics may come up. After 20+ years of teaching English in public high schools, I’ve learned that it is best to validate the student who sincerely and respectfully brings up a sensitive topic while at the same time, steering the conversation to a safe place for all learners. Since this is a one-time class, it is unlikely that many sensitive topics will come up, but be aware that life before, during, and after COVID 19 will likely be topics that students want to include as their writing topics. I won’t specifically bring up COVID, but if a student does so in a respectful manner, I will let the students discuss writing prompts around that topic.
