Letters in the alphabet do something really interesting. They make sounds, and together those sounds make the words we all say everyday. This will be a multi-day class for 5 weeks, each class will discuss letter blends and digraphs that are created by pairing letters in the alphabet together and the sounds each makes. Students will listen to teacher provided instruction, then practice saying the letter blend sounds, lastly each student be asked to tell the teacher a word that begins with that sounds. Pictures of items that begin with each letter blend will be shown. Students will be asked to say what letter sound they hear in the word. Under the picture the word will be printed. This is to help students write the word during the scavenger hunt. Some students have enjoyed writing the words we learn during the lesson or writing a sentence using the word. This is not required, but if students want to do this, having the word printed under the picture is helpful. As students master the topic the teacher may ask them to say a word that ends with that sound. For homework, students will go on a scavenger hunt around the house or by doing a parent supervised internet search for age appropriate items that begin with the letter blend taught that day. Students will complete their homework by submitting it within 1 day of class ending.
Learning Goals
Students will practice blending letter sounds and complete a scavenger hunt as a homework assignment each time class meets.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi,
My name is Rebekah Thomas. My educational background is 4 years teaching students from PreK to middle school age while earning a Master's degree in Special Education. After completing that I volunteered with a program called Team Read helping students from 1st-3rd grade improve their reading skills. In both the traditional classroom and tutoring settings, I used fun, interactive, or game like instruction along with the curriculums used. This helped students, stay motivated, excited, and engaged. My teaching style is one of care and understanding, and whole-heartedly believing every student can learn, and it's ok if learning happens at different paces.
In my free-time I love going to concerts.
