What's included

4 live meetings
4 in-class hours
Assessment
There will be no formal assessments, but we will have "Exit Tickets" that students will complete as a way to gauge their understanding of the topics taught.

Class Experience

In this 4 week class we will explore the basics of Python. We will cover topics like what programming is, different use cases, examples of things that use code, and go over what the course will look like, schedule wise.

Week 1: We will cover an intro to programming, explore the different programming languages and what they are used for, as well as explore what types of projects students can begin thinking about wanting to create for the end off the class.

Week 2: We will go over Python basics; data types, variables, if/else statements. At the end of the class, students will build a simple interactive program that uses all topics covered during the class.

Week 3: We will review Week 2 content with a refresher exercise, then move into covering loops; what they are used for, different kinds of loops, and what is needed for a loop to work. At the end of class, students will build on the program created in Week 2, and add a loop component to it.

Week 4: We will cover the different program students can build using what was learned in Weeks 1 - 3, then spend class time building that program, using the resources they have access to: fellow students, teacher, notes sheet that will be provided. At the end of the class students will present their programs and have other students interact with their program.
Learning Goals
Learners will learn the basics of programming, and more specifically the Python programming language basics to provide them the tools needed to build a Python project at the end.

Parental Guidance
Students will use an online coding platform called Repl.it for them to be able to collaborate with others as well as have an online coding platform that does not require download and the ability to submit code for review by teacher. Please create an account for the students to use so that they can access the class content posted there, as well as their code.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
  • repl.it
Sources
We will use the Repl.it platform to program and be able to share code

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a passion for teaching classes in Programming specifically using Python as well as classes that work with building cool things! I have been working on both spaces for about 4 years now and I love the work that I have been able to do, but more importantly the students I have been able to teach and work with. I look at teaching as a way to get students excited about teaching, because if someone enjoys something, they are likely to share it with others, and that alone starts the cycle of learning that makes teaching such a rewarding field.
