Class Experience

In this course, learners will be exposed to two of the three primary Japanese alphabets: hiragana and katakana. Learners will develop an understanding of the sounds the characters make, as well as how to write them in the appropriate stroke order. The class will be broken up into 3 weeks of hiragana and 3 weeks of katakana instruction, with assessment of understanding and proficiency throughout. My teaching style involves a high amount of connection to relevant learner interests and memorization tools to help learners really understand and take an interest in what they are learning.

A breakdown of the weekly schedule for students:
~Monday: weekly lesson materials will be released, to include a video lecture and demo of drawing the characters, as well as a practice sheet to use for independent practice drawing the characters
~Tuesday: students have this day to continue independent study and practice
~Wednesday: interactive activities will be released such as games, Jamboard access, discussion board posts, review activities, or creative projects like arts and crafts
~Thursday: learners will continue to interact with the class materials and can utilize this time to finish up any assignments or activities
~Friday-Sunday: learners can expect to receive feedback on submitted materials during this time frame

Students are expected to interact with each other in multiple ways each week. Interaction will include:
-Class discussions about the characters of the week
-Q&A discussion boards for instructor-to-learner and learner-to-learner education
-Personalized assignment feedback from instructor
-Creative project presentations

Supply List
Learners will need access to a device that can be used in class. Paper and pencil or some other writing implement is suggested, but digital practice of character writing is also acceptable. Practice worksheets will be provided on a weekly basis for character writing practice. Students will have the creative freedom to do whatever kind of character project they would like, so arts and crafts supplies or some other materials may be needed on a learner by learner basis, but are not required or necessary
