Class Experience

Are you looking for a variety of writing experiences for your learner? This 4 week class combines my "Let's Write a Letter, List, Story, Opinion" classes into a multi-day writing camp. This camp will provide the opportunity to write lists, a story, a letter and an opinion piece. (You know children LOVE to tell you what they think!) My job is to coach your learner through putting their ideas into a manageable thought and then stretching out words as they write the words/sentences along with me. During this 4-week camp, we will cover; listening, speaking, connecting to a story, sharing thoughts and putting them into a spoken and then written sentence. Week 1 is all about making lists (pre-writing). Lists may include favorite colors, favorite foods, animals--the possibilities are endless! During week 2, we will use those lists to write a story. High frequency words, capitalization, and punctuation will be covered as part of the writing process. Week 3 will focus on writing a friendly letter. Week 4 will wrap up with an opinion piece. The camp is limited to 5 students to allow learners to share ideas with each other through conversations and to work through writing a sentence together. Learners should be able to write most letters of the alphabet and have some knowledge of letters and sounds. This camp is appropriate for English Language Learners and is ideal for kindergarten (current or incoming) students and first grade students who find writing difficult. Every camp will be different, so students are welcome to take this course as many times as they would like!

Learning Goals

Using an interactive five-step process, students will improve their ability to words and sentences on a topic of their choice and correctly spell age-appropriate high frequency words. Please note: We will use phonetic spelling for some words (writing words as they sound). This course does not focus on spelling, but builds confidence in getting ideas on paper.
