This is an English Writing class for students who are developing their writing skills, and are looking to develop their skills in specific writing genres. This class will not meet face-to-face. Each week will consist of a variety of tasks to allow learners to improve their writing skills. Learners will work collaboratively to improve their writing skills and knowledge. One of the benefits of this flex class can be that learners can take as much time as they want to review materials and the recordings. Week 1 - Articles Learners will practise writing to inform and explain. This week will incorporate project-based learning and the teacher will lead discussions via posts in the Outschool classroom. Week 2 - Letters Learners will practise writing formal and informal letters. The teacher will use the Outschool recording feature to give personalised feedback. We will conduct a class analysis of letters. Week 3 - Reviews Learners will practise writing to review and comment. This week students will evaluate each others’ work and there will be a performance assessment for learners to demonstrate their learning. Week 4 - Reports Learners will practise writing about facts and opinion. Learners will work collaboratively to write a report on their own topic. Learners will be required to: ✔️Share ideas with other learners by completing written tasks. ✔️ Post in the Classroom for instructor feedback. ✔️ Critique and comment on classmates' paragraphs. ✔️ Respond to discussion questions in the Classroom. ✔️Work collaboratively to analyse model texts. ✔️Complete a jigsaw writing task collaboratively with other learners. Each week will include vocabulary, grammar and input on ideas. Recordings will be 20-25 minutes long. Learners will be provided with scaffolding for each of the tasks that they can follow. Each week will include input on suggested language learners may wish to use along with grammatical structures that will suit the topics. Learners are encouraged to include their own ideas. A flex course allows learners to cover material during a time that is convenient for them each week. Students are encouraged to check in with the teacher weekly via the Outschool classroom, which will allow for more engagement between the teacher and learner. After weekly lessons, students can collaborate with their peers by replying to the announcements and lesson postings in the Outschool classroom. Participation will include the Introduction post, discussion posts, assignments, and projects in the Classroom. This allows students to process what they are learning by collaborating with peers and the teacher. Participation in assignments allows students to practise and reinforce learning. This also provides opportunities for the teacher to gauge student learning and provide interventions if necessary. Private messages or classroom comments are usually responded to within 24 hours with the exception of Saturdays and Sundays. All materials are posted in the classroom by the end of Monday (UK time) each week. Learners are expected to interact in the classroom each week on the various posts in the required ways and complete the necessary tasks by Sunday each week. This is important as educational research shows that consistent interaction and feedback is necessary in order to create a quality learning experience. I want to ensure that students are given a rich learning experience, and not left to learn content on their own. The videos will be available for the length of the course. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with further questions. I look forward to being part of your learning journey!
