In this ongoing course, we will learn about a range of academic writing styles including reports, articles and essays. Suitable for ESL learners. Essay writing is an important skill essential for academic excellence and personality development. Learners with good essay writing skills are able to develop expression and creativity through language and ideas. This class will give time to develop ideas, and practice essay writing, whilst also providing feedback each week. What themes will we write about? Week of 10/2/25 - Using Evidence - Analysing and Writing Topic Sentences Week of 17/2/25 - Using Evidence - Understanding the Main Ideas in Lectures Week of 24/2/25 - Using Evidence - Reading a Text to Prepare for a Tutorial Discussion Week of 3/3/25 - Preparing for Academic Study - Speaking in Seminars Week of 10/3/25 - Preparing for Academic Study - Reading, Making Notes and Summarising Week of 17/3/25 - Preparing for Academic Study - Understanding the Wording of Academic Tasks Week of 24/3/25 - Preparing for Academic Study - Understanding the Introduction of a Lecture Week of 31/3/25 - Academic Focus - Extracting Key Factual Information Week of 7/4/25 - Academic Focus - Writing a Description of Visual Information Week of 14/4/25 - Academic Focus - Recognising Key Information in a Lecture Week of 21/4/25 - Academic Focus - Presenting Visual Information Week of 28/4/25 - How to Write in the Passive Form Week of 5/5/25 - How to Write an Article Week of 12/5/25 - How to Organise Paragraphs Week of 19/5/25 - How to Include Evidence Week of 26/5/25 - How to Write a Conclusion Week of 2/6/25 - How to Write a Formal Letter Week of 9/6/25 - How to Write a Report Week of 16/6/25 - Using Evidence - Identifying Main Ideas and Supporting Evidence Further classes will be added. Please can learners bring a notebook and pen to class each week. Activity sheets will be posted to the classroom at 7pm PST on Sunday each week.
