Welcome to "Let's Write a Story". Many children struggle with motivation to write a creative story. A blank page sitting in front of them can be overwhelming with deciding where to start. A little guidance in where that start is exactly, and plenty of practice in doing so, can help a reluctant writer turn into a voracious writer. Some of my reluctant writing students have done complete 180's and began writing their own complete books after just a couple sessions (spread over time).

Objective:
To engage the child in creative writing by crafting a short story or poem centered around their interest.
To foster imagination and storytelling skills.

Please let me know ahead of the session if you would like your child to work on physical writing in addition to creative writing.

Materials (optional for those needing or wanting dictation):
Paper or digital writing platform (Google Docs, Word, etc.)
Pencils, markers, or digital drawing tools

Lesson Plan:
Introduction

We will spend a few minutes introducing the objective: to create an exciting story about something they love or find interesting.
They will think of their favorite characters, places, or adventures related to their interest and how they want their story to pan out.

Brainstorming Session

We will brainstorm those interests and the intriguing ways to blend them together.
We will think a setting, characters, and a problem or challenge for their story.

Story Structure Discussion

Depending on level of child, we will go over basic story elements: beginning, middle, and end.
We will outline their story by discussing the main characters, setting, and problem or adventure they'll encounter.

Writing Time

The child will then spend 8-10 minutes writing or dictating their story with assistance as needed.

If desired and time allows, we will spend some time at the end of the writing class to discuss how they could illustrate their story.

Another option for this class is writing the story digitally using graphics to engage the imagination on Canva. A PDF copy of the story will be supplied to the Parent/Student after the session.

Follow-up sessions can be used to explore other writing stylers connected to their story:
Narrative- expanding their short story into other forms
Expository- turning their story into a news event
Descriptive- writing character outlines for their story
Persuasive- writing an ad for a book or movie on their story to persuade people to read or see it
