Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
In this five week class, we will learn to write a summary and then will learn creative techniques to revise and edit our summary.

Week 1 - I will read a short fairy tale and will model how to fill in a graphic organize that is used with the Someone - Wanted - But - So - Then method of writing a story. Students will have their own graphic organizer to fill in. Then I will demonstrate how to turn the notes on the graphic organizer into a paragraph.

If time permits, students will hear another story and will then try this on their own. If we run out of time, I will post a recording of the story into the classroom. Students will then complete the graphic organizer and paragraph on their own. Each student will need to complete this step. The paragraph they write during this step will serve as the rough draft they will use for the remaining classes.

Week 2 - We will learn the technique of exploding our nouns and verbs by adding adjectives and adverbs. I will demonstrate how to do this and then students will go in and do this to their own paragraphs. We will discuss capitalization rules and will edit our rough drafts. This will also provide a great review for grammar: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

Week 3 - This week we will take our paragraphs from last week and will learn another technique - adding dialogue. We will brainstorm what emotions the characters might be feeling and will add appropriate dialogue to match the emotion. We will review the proper use of quotation marks. We will take a look at the setting of our story and see what details need to be added so that the reader can paint a picture in their minds.

Week 4 - We will make a final revision to our rough drafts. We will brainstorm sensory words and incorporate them into our stories. We We will also discuss having a moral to the story and each student will add a moral to their story.

Week 5 - This will be a chance for students to share their stories with the class. Depending on the number of students, this may be a shorter class period.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Jennifer Dodge, but my students call me Mrs. Jen. I am a certified early childhood teacher with a B.S in Early Childhood Education and a minor in music from Samford University. I have spent 12 years in the classroom teaching preschool, kindergarten, and language arts to first through seventh graders. For the past eleven years, I have had the awesome privilege of homeschooling my own three children who are now ages 22, 20, and 16. Currently, I teach kindergarten in a private school .

I am excited to help students learn to read and LOVE to read through hands on activities so that they will become lifelong learners! You will find that many of my classes are geared toward developing reading skills, novel studies, and hands-on book clubs, and book clubs that center around historical fiction so that we can take a deep dive into the historical aspect of the novel. I also love to teach preschool and kindergarten aged children, so I will also be providing classes that involve practice with fine and large motor skills, music and movement, and beginning reading, math, and science skills so that my students will be ready for school.

As a former homeschool mom, I also look forward to being able to provide classes that support other homeschool moms. If there is an area where their child needs extra enrichment or assistance, or if there is a subject that a mom just simply hates to teach, I would LOVE to partner with her in the homeschooling of her children.

I believe that learning to read and write NEVER has to be boring! I teach my classes with great enthusiasm so that my students will see my love for the subject. I hope this joy will come through the Zoom call and our classroom activities so that they will be excited to read and write as well. Reading and writing is a skill that every person will need throughout their lifetime. It is my goal as a teacher to make the learning of these skill enjoyable and exciting.

I look forward to having the opportunity to teach your child!
