Homework
1-2 hours per week. While students will work on their stories on their own time and at their own pace, I will not be assigning any homework that must be completed. Students are strongly encouraged to write for at least an hour total every week, but it is by no means a requirement.
Assessment
There will be no formal assessment given. However, detailed critiques will be available upon the student's request.

Class Experience

Once a week, students will get together to talk about progress writing their books, have a chance to share snippets of their stories with the class by reading them out loud, and go over a concept that will help them improve their creative writing skills. Class meetings will be structured as a student-driven discussion, and I will be there to provide insight, topic review, and pointers, as well as to make sure that everyone has a chance to share as they feel comfortable. If students don't have anything specific they want to review or anything they'd like to share, then I will choose a review topic randomly out of a jar and we will discuss it together. I will prompt students with questions and if there are any students that already understand the topic, they will have a chance to assist other students in learning.

While students will work on their stories on their own time and at their own pace, I will not be assigning any homework that must be completed. Students are strongly encouraged to write for at least an hour total every week, but it is by no means a requirement. If students are stuck or are just struggling with finding the motivation to write (we call this author's block), then I can provide writing warm-ups to help them get past their block. Or, if that's not what they need, it's always okay to take a break from writing for a while and come back to it.

If a student is writing an original story (with their own world and characters rather than ones from other media) and if they would like to publish their story, parents may contact me and I will walk them through the process of self publishing. I am also willing to create a simple cover and description for their book for free, or parents may commission me to create a more dynamic cover for their book. I guarantee that I'll be one of the first to buy a copy of any of my learners' published books!

Learning Goals

The goal of this class is to allow learners to get feedback on their work, both from me and from peers. We will also have weekly reviews of what students learned in "Let's Write a Book! Planning Your Story" as well as topics such as sentence structure, voice, falling point, etc.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
These stories will be coming from learners' imaginations, and I will be encouraging students to share. All content must be SFS (Safe for School) but there are many books in literature targeted towards preteens and teens that involves violent themes and occasional swear words, (Such as d*mn and b*st*rd, but never as strong as the F word. Slurs are NEVER allowed in any form). I will inform all learners that they need to give content warnings for violent content and mild swearing, but being that this is a creative writing class, there may be learners who choose to write about these topics. However, I will monitor this closely and make sure appropriate warnings are put in place for students who do not want to be exposed to these themes.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
