Class Experience

Let’s Talk! series offers like-aged students to practice their speaking and listening skills while sharing ideas about a FUN topic! These small-group sessions allow students to have ample time to speak about the weekly topic. Class size is limited to FIVE LEARNERS so that students aren’t lost in the shuffle of larger classes and every student gets equal spotlight.

Each week, a fun or silly topic will be posted for students to think about. Students do not need to prepare any written statements or props - they should only come prepared with a few ideas about the given topic.

Week #1: Describe a world made of candy.
Week #2: What is the best gift you ever received and why?
Week #3: If you could be any television character, who would you be? Why? What would you miss about your real life?
Week #4: Who is the kindest person you know? Why do you think so? Give examples.
Week #5: Who was your first best friend? What are some of the things you did together? Are you still friends?
Week #6: What kind of weather would best describe your personality? Why?
Week #7: What is one custom or tradition that your family has that not all families celebrate?
Week #8: If you were asked to design a hilarious school uniform, what would it look like?
Week #9: What is the nicest thing another classmate has ever done for you? Did you repay them for their kindness, or pay it forward?
Week #10: Are you musical? Describe why or why not.
Note: This class is on-going, meaning additional topics will be added as the class continues. Students may join at any time. Each week's topic will be posted in the classroom.

Each class will begin with brief introductions and a review of the rules. Following this, each student will be given five minutes of individual “spotlight” time. The student will share for a minute or two about the topic, then invite other learners to ask questions or expand on ideas, allowing the student to “think on his/her feet” and explore other opinions.

As the teacher, I will act as a guide and moderator, encouraging each participant to speak and ensuring that all comments and questions remain respectful. The students will practice leadership skills while “spotlighted” with support from me as needed.

North Carolina Teaching Certificate in English/Language Arts
Master's Degree in Education from North Carolina State University
I am a veteran teacher who has enjoyed over 15 years in a variety of educational settings. I have a master's degree in education from an accredited university in North Carolina, USA, and TESOL certification. I am passionate about teaching and love engaging with young people in the classroom - both virtually and in-person! Over the last decade, I have taught students in grades 5 through 10 in the traditional classroom setting and have managed an afterschool program, engaging with students in the elementary and middle grades. My focus has been on English/Language Arts and social studies, but I have also worked as a reading interventionist to help students bridge gaps to become more successful in the classroom. I strongly believe in the experience of learning; students retain much more meaningful information when they are engaged and enjoy the experience. This also allows students to boost critical thinking skills without even knowing it!

I am also the mother of two active, beautiful, young adults who introduce me to the many joys of life in a variety of ways. We are a traveling family, looking for adventure at every turn. We seek out experiences that help us grow as meaningful members of society. Along with traveling, I love paddling, outdoor activities, reading, and crocheting. I am excited to bring my love of teaching to OutSchool! Thank you for sharing your children with me and allowing them to grow as learners.
