Class Experience

Not everyone is a boy or a girl. Some are both! Some are in-between! Some are way beyond either of those definitions! Gender is expansive, and can be anything you want!

Your learner will explore gender beyond the binary of boys and girls. This class will look at some examples of already defined gender identities and what words we can use to describe them! There will be plenty of time for your learner's questions and space for them to share their experiences and feelings. This is an introductory class aimed at younger learners. I offer a version of this course for learners 7-10 as well.

**Please note that class length is a rough estimate. Actual class run times will be dependent on the number of students and the amount of questions from students. **

A note to skeptic parents: This class is EDUCATIONAL! This class is not to promote any gender identities as superior than others. Your learner does not need to identify as non-binary or genderqueer or transgender to enjoy this class and learn. The goals of this class are to educate your learner on non-cisgender and non-binary gender identities, and to give your student the tools to think about their own gender in different, non-gendered terms.

Learning Goals

Students will learn the words to talk about gender identities outside of the binaries. They will be able to describe their own feelings about their genders without using terms like boy and girl or trans and cis.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a non-binary educator. In addition to my own lived experience as a trans person, I received my BA in Women's and Gender Studies from DePaul Univeristy. I was the president of a student organization that conducted Trans 101 workshops for student and educators. My coursework contained numerous books and articles written by and about trans and gender non-conforming people. My senior thesis project was focused primarily on how trans and queer people fit into the world. I have read and theorized about gender and sexuality for most of my adult life. I have experience exploring gender with youth in my time as a camp counselor with the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance.
