Class Experience

The benefits of singing in a group setting are many:
builds self-esteem and confidence.
increases emotional wellbeing.
promotes joy
reduces stress
builds community and promotes a sense of belonging

I have a teaching credential(K-8) and a Ph.D. in the area of literacy, language, society, and culture from U.C. Berkeley. My areas of research are culturally responsive teaching, multicultural education, teaching Black history, literacy development, teaching diverse learners, and arts-integrated education.

I have taught writing to youth for over 25 years. I currently also teach college writing and facilitate writing workshops for elementary and middle school students. Reader’s theater is a literacy strategy and performative tool I have implemented in all my classes (K-college). I have years of experience writing and directing plays in my classroom and facilitating community reader’s theater at the library for kids. I have been part of children’s musical theater groups and theater courses (Improvisation for Teachers) at the college level.

1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
