Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
In this six-week book study, learners will read and discuss Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. This is a highly adventurous book about a young boy who finds himself aboard a pirate ship in search of lost treasure with some of the most colorful characters in literature. It's entertaining and action-packed and can serve as a great introduction to the classics.

Each week, learners will come to class prepared to discuss the assigned chapters in the book. The teacher will lead them through a discussion starting from the main plot points and then digging deeper into literature themes, character motives, plot devices, and more. Learners will be encouraged to participate at the level that is comfortable for them either verbally or through the chat. They will also have the opportunity to ask questions of their own to clarify the text or to ask for their classmates insights or opinions about the book. It is hoped that, through this highly interactive format, learners will have a meaningful conversation that they will recall long after the class ends.

At the end of each class, learners will play a trivia game from blooket to check their understanding of the assigned reading. For those not familiar, Blooket is a website that allows teachers to create trivia games which can be presented either live or as an assignment to learners. For the purposes of this class, the game will be presented via the screen sharing feature on Zoom, and students will not need to visit any outside websites.

Treasure Island is divided into six parts, and this class will focus on one part per meeting. Each learner will need to have a copy of the book which can be downloaded for free as an eBook or purchased in print. Learners will need to have read the assigned chapters before class each week in order to participate fully in discussions and other activities. The class schedule is as follows:

Week 1. Part 1, chapters 1-6
Week 2. Part 2, chapters 7-12
Week 3. Part 3, chapters 13-15
Week 4. Part 4, chapters 16-21
Week 5. Part 5, chapters 22-27
Week 6. Part 6, chapters 28-34

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I'm Teacher Tricia, and I'm so happy to be here on Outschool with you. I teach classes in a variety of subjects including language arts, literature, history, and life skills. As a homeschool mom of two kiddos, I have experience teaching in many different subjects and with ages ranging from early elementary through middle school. I also currently teach at a local co-op where classes are held on a once a week basis in a format very similar to that of Outschool except that I am actually in the same room as my students. In addition I attended Purdue University with a major in Elementary education and received plenty of classroom experience during my time there. I believe education should be a life-long endeavor, and I strive to learn something new everyday. It is my firm belief that when information is given in a fun and interesting way, students are much more likely to find the learning process enjoyable and to remember their classes and the subjects taught far into the future. I also ensure that each of my classes meets the needs of learners of all types. By presenting materials in many different ways and formats, I hope to be able to connect with each and every learner. I am always available if you have questions. I look forward to teaching and learning with you.
