In this ongoing class, students will practice both the phonemic awareness and phonics skills necessary to read and spell words successfully. Each week, we will focus on one word family (for example: cat, bat, mat, sat are all in the same word family). This class is perfect for students who have learned their letter sounds and are ready to start reading! Students will be engaged throughout the lesson through Nearpod, which is completely free and allows students to stay engaged throughout the lesson and to get quick feedback from their teacher as they are working. Students (or parents) do NOT need to create an account to participate in the lesson, but will need to be able to access Nearpod either through the website online or the Nearpod app. *It is expected that your student already has mastered all or most of their lowercase letter identification and letter sounds to be successful in this class.* This class will begin with phonemic awareness activities and then we will move into phonics skills for reading and spelling words in the focus word family. Students will first practice blending 3-4 sounds together orally to make a word, without looking at any letters. To do this, I like to play a "mystery picture" game with a visual picture bank to help developing readers. Next, students will have an opportunity to segment words on their own (again, no letters yet!) with a picture prompt for the CVC word and Elkonin boxes to provide additional visual supports. Once students are comfortable with blending and segmenting words without any letters, then we will move into blending 3-4 letter sounds together to read words. Students will have the opportunity to use a visual picture bank to support their decoding skills, but we will also practice without any picture prompts to further extend your learner's blending and reading skills. Students will read and spell words in isolation, then we will move into reading words in decodable sentences. The final task in each class is "finishing" a sentence by spelling the missing word. Class structure: -Blending sounds to say CVC words -Segmenting sounds in CVC words -Spelling words with Elkoin boxes -Matching game (CVC words and pictures) -Blending letter sounds to read CVC words (with and without visual support) -Reading words with the targeted word family in a sentence (predictable sentences using "I see the ___." sentence frame, for example) -Finishing sentences by spelling the missing word If there is time at the end, we will play a word spelling and reading game to help strengthen your student's reading fluency and vocabulary.
