1 hour per week. This option is for students that would like to display mastery over the book. I have a range of options for students to use. Here are some options: Letters to characters. Character’s music playlists. Scene writing of 2 characters meeting each other. Like the Percy/Carter short story. Comparative essay. This could be comparing 2 characters or another book with this one on theme or literary devices like foreshadowing. Build an RPG character sheet for a character in the book. Artwork of a scene or character. Podcast episode discussing the book. Analysis of the Hero’s Journey in relation to the book. Plot diagrams.Assessment

US Grade 4 - 7
In this 11-week course, we will read aloud two chapters each week then we will discuss them and the previous chapters as a group. We will read the final three chapters for the last session. We will cover the various myths presented in the novel, such as the heroes, gods, monsters, and curses, as well as any themes, like Percy's desire to make his mother proud, his and his campmates' resentment towards their godly parentage for abandonment, and the power of friendship. Each chapter is slightly different in length so some weeks might have more reading than others but, for the most part, we should have at least 15 minutes of discussion time to review the chapters and glean any insights we might've taken away from them. I aim to have a teaching style that is as dialectical as can be. I want my students to grow into capable critical thinkers which is why this course is so valuable for everyone regardless of age. We grow from our past experiences (in this case, ancient experiences) to create a brighter future. While I plan on reading aloud each class session, if a student would like to take a turn reading to their peers (absolutely not mandatory), they may. After we are done reading for the day, we will discuss the chapters as a group. Students do not need to have read or know anything about Greek mythology in order to enjoy this novel. It is a fantastic foray into children's literature and mythology. If a student is coming into the class after the first session, it would behoove them to catch up to us in the novel but it is not required to join us. All are welcome!
Learning Goals
Students will have a greater understanding of Greek mythology and mythology in general as well as its purpose in modern society.
Students will increase their vocabulary.
