Let's read our diagraphs - RWInc Set 2 Sounds

Students will be rooted in a strong phonics foundation in this class. This course is based on the same principles taught in most UK schools called Read, Write Inc and is incredibly successful for English second language students.

Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 1
Beginner Level
There are so many different phonic classes out there and having taught a number of different types of curriculums I have seen what works for who and why. Long stories, songs and lots of chatting work well when it comes to English-speaking children who have a foundation in speaking English. What about students who have little exposure to English and a limited vocabulary? Well, this class solves the problem. This course is based on the successful Read, Write Inc curriculum that is used in many British schools. I have been trained in this approach, however, all materials that I will be using will be my own resources and therefore will be freely available for all the students to use as they please. This approach is based on lots of repetition, little discussion, short classes and focused instruction. All set 2 sounds will be taught. These are diagraphs that should be taught after all set 1 sounds (m a s d t, i n p g o, c k u b, f e l h sh, r j v y w, th z ch qu x ng nk). If your child has not yet learnt their set 1 sounds, please do the phonics set 1 course first. This course follows on from that.

The set 2 sounds are as follows: ay as in play, ee as in see, igh as in high, ow as in snow, oo as in zoo, oo as in book, ar as in car, or as in for, air as in fair, ir as in twirl, ou as in out and oy as in toy

Each week there will be 5 short lessons to watch. These lessons will be pre-recorded lessons that will be shared with an unlisted Youtube link. You are welcome to watch it as many times as you need. Three lessons will be introducing new sounds and the other two lessons will be a weekly review. With each recording there will be a printable, the letter flash cards that have been learnt and as reading builds up- words flashcards, reading sheets and handwriting practice. Once all sounds have been taught- I will make an appointment with each student and do a phonics and reading assessment and if students need more time in the class, I will extend the class period so that they can continue practicing until they feel confident to move onto a SET 3 level stage.
Classes are short but regular so that students can build up their foundation.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, my name is Carlin King. I am a Year 1 teacher living and working in the United Kingdom. I have been a primary school teacher for more than ten years and love being part of the formative years. I have been trained in a number of different phonetic programmes including RWInc (Read, Write Inc).

My greatest passion is teaching children to read and write. As a child, I loved to write stories. I found it came naturally to me as I was a total book worm. However, as a teacher, I have seen that many children struggle with creativity, vocabulary and sentence structure when it comes to their writing. When children have both a writing model and an interest in the subject matter - that is when creative writing takes shape. Engaging and exciting themes, fun and well-written books and fascinating historical events and characters are just some of the subjects I like to use in my writing lessons. These classes will be for primary school children roughly between the ages of 5-8. Basic phonetic knowledge needs to be there as we can then sound out and build sentences together.

I am a firm believer in teaching phonics when it comes to fluent and confident reading. I have been teaching children to read throughout my teaching career and have had many experiences in different phonetic programmes. I decided to create my own phonic reading scheme, using what I know works, and make it engaging and exciting for children.
I believe teaching is about having fun and allowing children to get emersed in a subject. As a teacher, I strive to be a guide - allowing children to let their interest and curiosity drive their learning. As a child, I loved school and was privileged to go to more than one school as I spent my childhood living in different parts of Africa. I was born in Nambia and then moved to Ghana when I was nine years old. As a teenager, I attended a wonderful boarding school in South Africa. I now live in England with my husband and two gorgeous babies.
