This Level B Guided Reading course is designed for beginning readers in pre-k or kindergarten that could benefit from extra practice with reading, sight words, and phonics skills. My goal is to help early readers gain confidence in their skills in an engaging and relaxed environment by providing an encouraging space to explore letter sounds, sight words, and easy readers. By keeping these classes small I am able to give each student the opportunity to participate throughout class and practice reading independently. Level B is a great place for your reader if they: Are able to identfy most letters and sounds Have a stronger sense of 1-1 matching Expanding their high frequency words You will find these characteristics in Level B books: Simple picture books Text on the page is highly supported by pictures One to two lines of text per page (3-7 words per page) Strongly sight word based Short, predictable sentences with repetition Here is an example of text from our reader, “Big and Little”: (Page 1) I can see animals at the zoo. (Page 2) I can see a big elephant. (Page 3) I can see a little monkey. I also offer Levels A, C, and D. Each class has three components: A) Sight Word Practice: We will go over a new sight word at the beginning of each class. Students will work together to complete activities with the sight word, and they will practice writing the word. We will also write a sentence using the sight word. B) Guided Reading: Each class will feature a new short story. We will start by making connections with the text and doing a picture walk. Students will practice reading the story together. We will go over any challenging words. Once the learners have had the opportunity to read through the text together, they will practice reading one at a time to work on fluency. C) Word Work: At the end of each class (if time allows) we will work on different phonics skills including beginning and ending sounds and blending words. I will post a printable copy of the reader we read in class as well as sight word practice sheets each week. These are optional, and can be used for extra practice outside of class. Students will need pencil/paper OR white board/dry erase marker. Here is what we will cover each week (material will repeat every 14 weeks): Week of August 1: Sight Words: little, big Word Work: ending sounds Week of August 8: Sight Words: there, are Word Work: ending sounds Week of August 15: Sight Words: go, look Word Work: ending sounds Week of August 22: Sight Words: play, here Word Work: ending sounds Week of August 29: Sight Words: will, make Word Work: ending sounds Week of September 5: Sight Words: so, they Word Work: ending sounds Week of September 12: Sight Words: this, have Word Work: ending sounds
