Beginner Level
Each week, we’ll explore a high-impact reading strategy—such as making inferences, visualizing, or summarizing—through engaging short texts, interactive discussion, and simple graphic organizers. These sessions are intentionally designed to help learners think critically about what they read, make personal connections, and communicate their ideas with clarity and confidence. With a structured approach that includes modeling, guided practice, and independent application, this course equips learners with lifelong reading strategies while helping them stay sharp during the school year or breaks. By the end of each session, students will walk away feeling more capable, more curious, and more connected to the stories and information they read. Whether your learner is catching up, keeping up, or reaching ahead, this class is here to help them thrive. Week of May 12: Making Thoughtful Inferences Use clues from the text and background knowledge to understand meaning beyond what is directly stated. Week of May 19: Predicting What Comes Next Practice making logical predictions by combining evidence from the story with what we already know. Week of May 26: Summarizing Key Ideas and Details Learn how to pull out the most important parts of a text and restate them clearly and briefly. Week of June 2: Synthesizing Information Across Texts Explore how to combine ideas from different texts or parts of one text to form a bigger understanding. Visualizing to Deepen Understanding Use sensory details and descriptive language to form mental images that make reading more vivid and memorable. Determining Theme and Message Identify big ideas and life lessons the author communicates through characters, events, or poems. Comparing Texts on a Similar Topic Read two texts on the same subject and compare how each one presents ideas, facts, or opinions. Understanding Nonfiction Text Structures Recognize cause/effect, compare/contrast, and sequence structures to better understand nonfiction. Using Context Clues to Define Words Practice figuring out the meaning of new vocabulary by looking at how it's used in a sentence or paragraph. Identifying Main Idea and Supporting Details Learn to determine the central idea and how details and examples support it throughout a text. Analyzing Characters and Their Actions Examine how characters change, what motivates them, and how their choices affect the story. Asking and Answering Questions Ask questions while reading to clarify understanding, then use the text to find clear, supported answers.
