Beginner Level
This Level A Guided Reading course is designed for beginning readers in pre-k or kindergarten that could benefit from extra practice with reading, sight words, beginning sounds, and phonics skills. My goal is to help early readers gain confidence in their skills in a engaging and relaxed environment by providing an encouraging space to explore letter sounds, sight words, and books. By keeping these classes small I am able to give each student the opportunity to participate throughout class and practice reading independently. Level A is a great place for your reader if they are: ⭐ Just beginning to learn to read ⭐ Beginning to learn letter sounds ⭐ Learning to use 1-1 matching ⭐ Learning some easy, high frequency words ⭐ Beginning to notice letter’s distinct features You will find these characteristics in our Level A books: ⭐ Simple picture books ⭐ Text on the page is highly supported by pictures ⭐ One line of text on each page (3-6 words per page) ⭐ Strongly sight word based ⭐Short, predictable sentences with a lot of repetition ⭐Here is an example of text from our book, “The Park”: I can run. I can slide. I can swing. Students have the ability to move up as the progress. I also offer Levels B, C, and D. Each class has three components: A) Sight Word Practice: We will go over a new sight word at the beginning of each class. Students will work together to complete activities with the sight word, and they will practice writing the word. We will also write a sentence using the sight word. B) Guided Reading: Each class will feature a new short story. We will start by making connections with the text and doing a picture walk. Students will practice reading the story together. We will go over any challenging words. Once the learners have had the opportunity to read through the text together, they will practice reading one at a time to work on fluency. C) Word Work: At the end of each class (if time allows) we will work on different phonics skills including beginning and ending sounds and blending words. I will post a printable copy of the books we read in class as well as sight word practice sheets each week. These are optional, and can be used for extra practice outside of class. Students will need pencil/paper OR white board/dry erase marker. Here is what we will cover each week (material will repeat every 14 weeks): Week of June 12: Sight Words: the, is Word Work: beginning sounds Week of June 19: Sight Words: it Word Work: beginning sounds Week of June 26: Sight Words: look, see Word Work: beginning sounds Week of July 3: Sight Words: can, go Word Work: beginning sounds Week of July 10: Sight Words: am, at Word Work: beginning sounds Week of July 17: Sight Words: like, to Week of July 17: Sight Words: we, here Word Work: beginning sounds Week of July 24: Sight Words: up, have Word Work: beginning sounds Week of July 31: Sight Words: she has Word Work: beginning sounds Week of August 7: Sight Words: he, had Word Work: beginning sounds Week of August 14: Sight Words: that, big Word Work: beginning sounds Week of August 21: Sight Words: little, look Word Work: beginning sounds Week of August 28: Sight Words: this, my Word Work: beginning sounds
