Class Experience

I love Percy Jackson. I mean I LOVE Percy Jackson. I want to read the books WITH YOU! Whether you have read them before or are reading them for the first time, we will have a blast reading together.

At the beginning of class every week, each reader will receive an assignment. They will read for one or more characters in the chapter. Each week we will read one chapter aloud together "Readers Theater" style. That means that I will read the narration and the spoken dialogue will be read by the students. Then everyone will read the next part of the book independently between classes. Each student will be expected to read approximately one chapter per day.

Schedule
Meeting One- Read chapter 1 aloud.
Week One Independent Reading- Chapters 2-6
Meeting Two- Read chapter 7 aloud.
Week Two Independent Reading- Chapters 8-13
Meeting Three- Read chapter 14 aloud.
Week Three Independent Reading- Chapters 15-19
Meeting Four- Read chapter 20 aloud.

Every student will be expected to participate in each class. It is my preference that cameras be turned on if possible. Having the camera on allows me to see if an unresponsive student just missed their turn or if the student is away from the computer. Student preference will be taken into account when speaking roles are assigned. Students may not get their first choice. They should be prepared to accept the role they are assigned. I promise we will have a lot of fun.
Learning Goals
This class allows students to work on reading fluency and reading comprehension.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Parents should know that this book contains fantasy violence. Heroes are placed in scary situations, threatened, and injured. Monsters are killed and turned to dust. There are references to demigods being children born of extramarital relationships between gods and mortals. PLEASE NOTE: All students will be required to read aloud in class. Students may request smaller roles if they are not as comfortable reading aloud, but they will need to read at least a few lines out loud in order to participate in class.
Supply List
Each student needs a copy of The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan. The books are available on Amazon for about $10 new as well as through most libraries, and other bookstores. The book must be the novel version. The graphic novel will not work for this class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
