ARRRRRRE you looking for a class where you can learn French by reading a novel? Look no further! This class is designed for students who have had a few classes of French class (or a few months in a traditional school setting). At my brick and mortar school in the United States, I would teach this book at the end of the year for French 1 or beginning of the year for French 2. The class will be centered around reading this novel in French and the class will be conducted predominantly in...
Students will learn basic French vocabulary through reading the book: "Les pirates français des caraïbes" by Mira Canion & Carol Gaab. Students will be able to communicate what happens in the story and make predictions for future chapters based on what they know about the characters.
Our goal is to get through the entire book in 4 weeks. I have planned for us to complete the majority of the work in class, however, if students require more assistance in a live classroom with understanding a concept, and/or important plot point, I would like to address those needs in class. Please plan for 10-15 minutes of additional reading outside of each class to either pre-read or re-read a chapter.
Required: "Les pirates français des caraïbes" by Mira Canion & Carol Gaab ($6 - $10) This book can be found on Amazon, FluencyMatters.com, or TPRSbooks.com Recommended: Paper & pencil/pen for taking notes.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be consistently informally assessed through "check-ins" where the teacher will ask reading comprehension questions in French and ask them to respond. There will be no official grades, however we will correct the answers to the comprehension questions in class so the student will know exactly where they stand and how much they have understood about the story.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
