For learners who are taking this class for reading help, they are encouraged to read as much as possible outside of class. This can be a book which we will be discussing in class or a book of their own choosing that they personally enjoy.

Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 12
This class will center around the student's current needs in either reading, writing, or both!

Reading Comprehension Help:
For older students who would like to improve their reading skills, I can assign a certain number of pages from a book (or a chapter for instance) for the learner to read each week outside of class. When they come to class, I will ask some questions and check their understanding of the material. Depending on the age of the student and the material read, it can lead to some interesting discussions!
For younger students, I will screen share some age appropriate reading material for us to read together during class and then ask some questions to see how well they understood the material.

Reading Aloud Help:
If the student needs help on pronunciation and reading more fluently, I will have the student practice reading aloud and will help them with any weak areas they may have (depending on the student's needs, we may review phonics, vocabulary, or practice spelling). We can either use the student's current reading assignment they have from school as practice or something that they personally enjoy reading in their free time. (When the student enjoys the material or is reading about a character they love, it can keep them motivated to practice reading in their free time too!) I want this session to be as tailored and personalized as possible to each learner so please let me know whatever preferences they may have.

Writing Help:
If the student needs help on how to begin a writing assignment (an essay for example), I will help the student learn how to brainstorm and make suggestions on where to start. Or if the student would like to practice writing in general we can make it more fun by doing different forms of creative writing (or journaling). For instance, I can give the student a thought provoking prompt (either a written sentence or screen sharing a picture) for them to write about during class and encourage the student to write a short story based off the prompt. For students who need assistance or would like feedback concerning poetry, I can assist with different types of poems and let the student work on a poem in class either based off a prompt I give them or one they may have already started. If the student has already started a writing project but needs assistance with either continuing or finishing it, I can help the student to brainstorm and find ways to keep their momentum going when they feel stuck.

Personal Creative Project Help:
Personal creative projects are also welcomed! For example, if a learner wants to just learn more about poetry, writing their own book, reading aloud for recordings, or something else fun, feel free to let me know. I hope to be able to assist each learner according to their personal preferences. (Just communicate with me ahead of time so that I can prepare for the class accordingly.)

Speech Presentation Help:
For students who are preparing a speech, I can check for any grammatical errors and can offer feedback on the learner's modulation, pronunciation, and expression as needed. (Practicing giving a speech in front of someone else is a great way to prepare!) I have helped students ages 5-16 with checking their speeches and I will say that gaining the confidence beforehand plays a big part in a successful delivery!

English as a Second Language:
For young beginning readers or those who are learning English as a second language, we can work on phonics, pronunciation, and vocabulary building and tailor it to your learner's needs.

Note to parents & guardians: I like to suggest that, if possible, you can communicate with me the learner's needs before the day of class so that I can prepare the class time to be focused on whatever area the learner most needs help with. This is a tailored class, which means that each parent may request something a bit different for their learner, such as having the first half of class dedicated to working on reading comprehension and the second half of class set aside for doing some writing practice.

If a learner needs any other one on one tutoring assistance related to either reading, writing, or the English language in general, feel free to reach out to me!

Don't see a day or time convenient for your learner? Feel free to send me a message with your day/time request and I'll do my best to accommodate your learner's scheduling needs.

Looking for a weekly version of this class? Check out my weekly tailored tutoring class if you'd like to have the same time every week.
Learning Goals
Students will learn how to improve their own writing in whichever area they may need help in (essay writing, creative writing, etc). Structure, vocabulary, and style of voice may be emphasized depending on the type of project the student is currently working on.

Supply List
Students who would like to practice reading using a current book or reading assignment from school should have the reading material ready so that they can read aloud during this session for feedback and assistance. Similarly, students who need assistance with a current writing assignment should have this assignment on hand so that I can either offer feedback on what they wrote or help them on where they left off in the writing process. I recommend that all learners have either a pencil and paper handy (or an electronic device depending on their preference of writing). This way if the student needs to take notes or do a practice exercise they can do so.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I have been working as a tutor for over ten years and have been teaching reading (phonics, vocabulary, pronunciation, etc) to children from ages 3 and up. I've also enjoyed encouraging children to think more creatively- which is more than half the battle with writing! I've assisted high school students with their essays as a private writing tutor and I currently host book clubs and creative writing meet ups on zoom for kids and young adults in my free time as a fun, creative outlet.
