Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
It's time to read!
Get ready to laugh. In this class your learner will practice reading aloud from the hilariously wacky Fly Guy books.

A huge thanks to Tedd Arnold for creating these wonderful readers. Fly Guy books have a Guided Reading Levels of F-K, an AR Score of 1.3-2.7 and a Lexile Level range of 270L-530L. Your learner should be stepping into or already within one of these reading ranges.

If this reading level if too high for your reader, check out my Let's Practice Reading: Elephant and Piggy class.
If it's too low, check out my Let's Read Together: Owl Diaries class

Learners will take turns reading to a special feathered guest. I have parrots and chickens, and will rotate through which bird is joining us.

I have a BA in English and Early Childhood development, and have been teaching and tutoring reading for over 20 years. While learners are reading, I will help them with pronunciation and decoding, sight word recall, punctuation rules, letter sounds, and word meanings. Once we have finished the book we will strengthen our reading comprehension by drawing, discussing and acting out what happened in the story. We will also talk about a key element of the story, such as friendship, perseverance, or self-respect.

Have your learner bring pencil and paper to draw their favorite moment, or simply write down their favorite words.

This is an on-going class. Your learner can subscribe and join us every week, or decide when to attend on a week by week basis. I will use eighteen books from the series. They can be read in any order.

You do not need to own the book in order to participate in the class.

Hello, Outschool families. I'm Miss Robin, The Bird Lady, and I'm here to talk about birds. All of my classes, for ages 3 through 11, focus on at least one feathered creature while also promoting literacy, creativity, and social skills. I'm an avid reader and I'm passionate about instilling in my students a lifelong love of reading. I'm also a children's book writer and love exploring stories and creating with kids.

I believe that learning is driven by curiosity and wonder. As a teacher, I take a wholistic approach, using the materials present to introduce and reinforce mathematics, literacy, and science. My classes are set up to encourage participation through listening and sharing. And, of course, they all include something birdy-ful.

I have a B.A. in English and Sociology, with an emphasis on creative writing and early childhood development, from St. Olaf College. Over the years, I've written five middle-grade novels while also working as a nanny, a pre-school teacher, an after-school daycare provider, or an elementary school reading tutor. I am currently the nursery coordinator for a local non-profit, an Outschool mom of four, and a bird caretaker. My house holds a pandemonium of parrots. My backyard is home to a flock of chickens. I also spend time at a local parrot sanctuary, and bird-sit for neighbors and friends.

When I'm not spending time with birds, I'm enjoying a board game with friends, spending time with a good book, making a mess in my kitchen, coaxing new growth in my garden plots, singing loudly in my shower, or catching up on the latest Disney/Pixar/Marvel stories with my kids.

Thank you for spending some time with me today. I look forward to meeting your wonder-filled learners!
