Let's Play the Tinkertar!
Class experience
US Grade Kindergarten - 2
Beginner Level
In this 8 week class, learners will learn the basics of music by learning how to play the Tinkertar. Tinkertars are taking early music learning by storm. Learners will learn the basics of melodies and rhythms and explore these concepts on the Tinkertar. With only one string and color coded notes, learners easily learn the beginning concepts of note reading and how to play a song by following a pattern. They learn how to pluck a guitar/ukulele type instrument, yet only have to learn one...
Students will: Develop a beginning understanding of what music is. Foster creativity Develop hand-eye coordination Learn that musical notes go up and down Be able to clap to the basic beat of a song Create rhythm that go with the beat of a song Play at least 5 or 6 different songs Change up a song to make it personal Develop confidence! Week 1: Let's explore our Tinkertar! Let's talk about how to take care of it, hold it, and put our fingers on the colors. This fosters a love for music, encourages a desire to express creativity and fine motor skills. Week 2: Let's strum some rhythms on our Tinkertar. Let's play a short scale. This fosters coordination and the ability to feel a beat. Learners will learn about slow notes and fast notes in relation to beats in a song. Week 3: Let's play rhythm games and play a longer scale. Let's learn our first real song, Hot Cross Buns. Rhythm games help foster recognition of tempo and playing to the beat of music. Learning a basic scale develops fine motor coordination, the beginning parts of melody and how to follow directions using hand-eye coordination. Week 4. Let's review Hot Cross Buns and learn The Farmer and the Dell. Can you make your own song? Creativity is fostered after learning the basics of melody making. Learning a second song will continue to develop fine motor skills and the ability to recognize rhythm. Week 5. Let's review and learn how to play The Happy Birthday Song by following the color codes in our book. Week 6. Can you play a song for the class? Let's choose a song from our book to learn together! You get to help choose. Learners will continue to develop confidence using hand-eye coordination, fostering creativity and student directed music through song choice. They will learn that music can be enjoyed by them. Week 7. Let's play more rhythm games and learn another song or two from our book. Student choice! Students will continue to develop creativity by choosing songs and improvising on the song to make it their own by changing the words. We will also play a rhythm game that increases in tempo as we learn what tempo is and how it affects our music. Week 8. Let's perform for each other and have fun with music games and our Tinkertars! Time to wrap it up and go wild with our creativity and confidence.
I have been teaching music to children and adults of all ages for over 25 years. Music is my passion. Teach violin, viola, cello, piano and ukulele. Now, I also teach the Tinkertar! It's perfect for introducing young musicians to music and playing an instrument. I have lead youth orchestras and camps, as well as taught in school orchestras, taught students privately in my at home music studio as well as online. I currently teach over 40-50 private music students every week. Music education is my passion and I love sharing it with young learners.
