Class Experience

This class will be an introduction to the recorder, a small, flutelike instrument that has been popular for centuries. No prior experience is needed! Topics to be covered will include parts and care of the instrument, proper breathing and tone production, rhythm reading, and musical improvisation. By the end of the class, students will be able to play simple melodies using three to five notes.

Students will be engaged in a warm, supportive environment.

Week 1:

This week will begin with a demonstration of the recorder and a brief overview of the history of the instrument. We will experience making our first sounds together. The goal is to have students playing as often and soon as possible. Students are encouraged each week to make their own music using what they have learned.

Week 2:

This week will focus on successfully playing our first three notes. We will use these to improvise together and to play simple melodies. We will also continue to practice rhythm patterns and performance fundamentals.

Week 3:

Building upon the previous week, we will add two more notes and play more complex melodies.

Week 4:

We will end our final week of Level 1 by doing a short performance for each other, using melodies that we have been learning. Parents are encouraged to listen nearby!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello parents,

I teach music classes for all ages, many of which can be taken without prior music experience. I also offer math tutoring and in the future hope to offer creative writing classes. Before coming to Outschool, I taught general music and band in public schools, as well as tutoring students in math and language arts.

I hold a master's degree in music composition, and a bachelor's degree in music theory and composition. For over twenty years I have written music for a variety of instruments and genres. I have also been a regular performer in classical, rock, blues, and jazz bands as a tubist, trombonist, and bass guitarist.

Former principals have described me as "awesome" and "a blessing" to my students, and I always strive to create a learning environment where they feel supported, safe, and happy.

Besides music, my hobbies include video games and writing fiction. I even wrote a fantasy novel ten years ago!
