Let’s Play Recorder - Level 1

Welcome aspiring recorder players! Parents - I am so excited that you have a child interested in learning more about music.  Music is fantastic for the mind, body and soul, and it is a great gift to give to your children!

Welcome!  I'm so excited to see that your student is interested in learning to play the recorder! This is a beginner recorder class.  It offers students the opportunity to learn to read music and play their instrument. Students do NOT need to have prior experience with the recorder. This course will also offer an excellent review for students whose beginning recorder experience was interrupted this year! (Please note - this is still a beginner class, and we will be starting with the basics, as many students have not ever played a recorder.  If your student is confident with B A G and C, please check out my other recorder listing, coming soon!) 

I strive to create a fun and beneficial learning environment. During classes, students will not only be learning to play the recorder, but they will also be acquiring skills that will enable them to read and play music independently.  To do this, they will be using, not just their recorders, but also their voices and bodies to help them understand pitch and rhythm.  Singing notes and using movement to reinforce concepts greatly influences success! 

The notes that we will focus on during this course are B, A, G, and C. 

Week 1: What is this thing? We will learn how to hold the recorder properly and make a good sound.  We will learn the notes B, A, and G. Students will be challenged to echo rhythm patterns correctly while playing the notes.  Hot Cross Buns will be introduced.

Week 2: BAG will be reviewed. We will continue learning "Hot Cross Buns". Quarter notes and half notes will be introduced. Students will learn "Mary Had A Little Lamb". The note C will be introduced. Students will be given the opportunity to play for the class.

Week 3: Review C. Eighth notes will be introduced. "Learn Shave and a Haircut". Learn "Baby Shark". Students will be given the opportunity to play for the class.

Week 4: Review BAGC. Talk about reading notes on the staff. Learn a new song! At the conclusion of class, students may play a song of their choosing as our graduation from the course. 


Following successful completion of level 1, students may enter the level 2 course!

Let's Play Recorder - Level 1: This course is for COMPLETE beginners who are unfamiliar with how to correctly hold a recorder and who cannot identify any notes and play them on the recorder. Those who have had few opportunities to play in school or otherwise would benefit from the review this course offers. 

Let's Play Recorder - Level 1 FLEX: This is a flexible course option - it is taught by recorded classes, but offers many opportunities for interaction through video messages through Flipgrid.  It is for beginners who are unfamiliar with how to correctly hold a recorder and who cannot identify any notes and play them on the recorder. Those who have had few opportunities to play in school or otherwise would benefit from the review this course offers. 

Let's Play Recorder - Level 2: This course is for students who are very familiar with B, A, G, and C.  They can easily play songs such as Hot Cross Buns, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Shave and a Haircut, and Baby Shark. They are ready to learn new notes! These students can easily hold a recorder and cover holes with their right AND left hand fingers. This course begins with reviewing B, A, G, and C by learning songs not covered in Level 1.  These songs will introduce different rhythmic patterns. During this course we will add the notes low C, D, and E, while we continue to utilize B, A, G, and C. 

Let's Play Recorder - Level 2 FLEX: This is a flexible course option - it is taught by recorded classes, but offers many opportunities for interaction through video messages through Flipgrid. This course is for students who have mastered B, A, G, and C.  They can easily play songs such as Hot Cross Buns, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Shave and a Haircut, and Baby Shark. They are ready to learn new notes! These students can easily hold a recorder and cover holes with their right AND left hand fingers.
