Class Experience

When we develop passions, we want to encourage them. Sometimes, though, it's more fun to engage with others who are interested in the same things. In Let's Play Minecraft Dungeons, kids will spend 90 minutes working cooperatively with others to achieve their goals. We will take on different dungeons, talk about our favorite armor and weapons, and why we like them. I will listen and ask questions so they can give me more detailed descriptions and explanations of game mechanics. Discussion between students about these topics is highly encouraged! We will strive towards conversations that are respectful and involve active listening.

The focus of this class is developing conversation skills with peers and adults, as well as learning to work together to accomplish a goal. I will offer positive feedback about a topic that students feel strongly about and give them an opportunity to feel heard and see their opinions and knowledge are valued. Learners will need their own copy of Minecraft Dungeons for this class. As this class will be entirely student-driven, there is no set weekly schedule.

Parental Guidance
Minecraft Dungeons is a game that attracts players of all ages and can bring with it the risks of online space. During class time, I monitor students' interactions with other players, but parents should also routinely check in with their students' Minecraft activity to ensure their students are playing in a safe manner. I routinely remind students of basic rules of online safety, such as not giving out personal contact information to people online, but I only have your student for 90 minutes a week. If you would like more information on cybersafety on Minecraft, please let me know! We will also regularly review the concepts of fair play and "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is" as they apply to online interactions. I will also reinforce the necessity of parents checking in on players and having open communication with parents in the event of unwelcome messaging. Again, these are concepts to reinforce with your students, as I only see them one hour per week. Please note that I will never communicate with students directly through Minecraft, in class or out. I use Outschool and Zoom for all teacher-student communications. I use our classroom games solely for educational purposes. Additionally, please be advised that gamer tags/usernames will be required for this class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a geeky parent to a geeky kid, a gamer wife to a gamer husband - and I love engaging in games and geekery with kids! I have been playing Minecraft for over a decade, though I enjoy allowing the students to teach me new things, so I often play dumb! ^_^
