Class Experience

Aliens are the perfect subjects for painting. No one knows what they look like, so no one can ever say yours looks wrong! In this class we will use acrylic paints to create a fun and colorful group of alien friends. We will start by choosing some colors and begin making random shapes on our canvas. We will learn to consider which colors we place next to each other as we go and to consider the composition as a whole in our design. As we continue adding shapes we will discuss where we think our aliens might be from and what makes them different or the same as us humans. Once we’ve painted our alien shapes we will begin filling in the background with a nice dark color to contrast our foreground and we will discuss these terms. At this point our aliens have begun to dry so we can add the next layer of detail. We will layer black and white paints to add eyes, mouths, and any other features we think our creatures need. We will end class by having students show and tell about their painting (not required). This will be a fun, easy going and interactive class. No painting experience required.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, friends! My name is Amy Sloan and I am an artist and a teacher. My degree may be in Photojournalism, but it’s painting, drawing, sculpting, and crafting that I adore and seek to share with art lovers of all ages!

My teaching philosophy mirrors that of the late, great Bob Ross, who helped inspire my own growth mindset by teaching that there are no mistakes in art, only happy accidents.

I currently teach arts and crafts in an after school/summer camp program for middle school students. I have further experience teaching jewelry making and illustration to both children and adults. And I am also the mother of a budding kindergarten artist!

I have been teaching on Outschool for over a year now and I love meeting new friends from around the globe and sharing what I know with them. I can’t wait to share all of my artistic tips and tricks with your student! Let’s make something beautiful!
