Beginner - Intermediate Level
Using visuals, hand motions, and repetition, students will memorize the poem "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll. Each week students will memorize part of the poem as well as review what has already been memorized. I will provide students with methods to review the poem outside of class in a way that works smoothly into their days without adding another item to their to-do list. I teach them how to use times when their hands are busy (ie doing chores, washing dishes, folding clothes, brushing teeth, setting the table, etc) but their minds are free (ie activities they do without thinking) as a time when to practice reciting. So the bonus to this class is I'm encouraging chores around the house. During class each student will be given a chance to recite the poem out loud using the visuals as clues. Class time will be lively and engaging filled with encouragement and praise. We will also discuss the imaginary vocabulary Lewis uses in this poem to help understand the "feel" of the poem. Students will be encouraged to recite the poem to family members or friends to help them practice reciting in a speed and tone that is easily understood. Rough Schedule Week 1 - Title, author and first 4 lines Week 2 - Review and add next 6 lines Week 3 - Review and add next 6 lines Week 4 - Review and add next 4 lines Week 5 - Review and add the next 4 lines Week 6 - Review and refine the poem
Learning Goals
Students will be able to recite the entire poem "Jabberwocky" at the end of the 6 classes.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Michigan Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hi! I'm teacher Veronica. I've been teaching for over 20 years. I’ve taught in both brick-and-mortar classrooms as well as online. I’ve been homeschooling my children since they were in kindergarten. I LOVE to memorize. I started memorizing large passages in 2010 and it's become an addiction with me. I'm offering classes that teach students how to memorize using classic poems. Not only does your child walk away with a poem memorized but more importantly he/she is learning a life-long skill of how to memorize and retain the passage. I'm also enjoying creating classes on problem solving. In these classes, students enjoy solving a mystery, but more importantly I'm teaching them how to think critically and ask questions. I'm laying a foundation of what problem solving looks like and how it can be used in our every day lives. My husband and I lived in Alaska for 18 years with our three children. We now reside in Michigan with our kids, one cat and one dog. One of my favorite things to do is walk around our neighborhood with my husband and enjoy the beauty. In Alaska we even walked when it was -30 degrees.
