Join Ms. Summer and other miniature-lovers in this one-time, 75-minute class where we will make sushi from polymer clay! Ms. Summer will guide everyone, step-by-step, through how to make realistic-looking, miniature California rolls and salmon nigiri! Please refer to the “Learner Supply List” for everything we will need. If you have ANY questions, please reach out to me so I can help clarify! General Class Outline: · Hellos/introductions and a quick “equipment check” to make sure everyone...
· Art as a form of self-expression · Developing fine motor skills · Listening comprehension · Positive attitude towards learning · Growing confidence and sense of self-worth · Conversation practice with other children and adults · Self-regulation of attention and behavior
Many of my classes here on OutSchool were inspired by a childhood obsession of mine and this one is no exception! I’ve been working with polymer clay since I was seven years old. I love tiny things, so I absolutely love making miniatures! I’m so excited to share my passion for miniatures with your learner(s)!
No official homework, as this is a one-time class. However, students are encouraged to continue to independently practice and experiment with polymer clay for their own enjoyment.
ESSENTIALS: · Polymer Clay · I HIGHLY recommend Sculpey or Fimo brand polymer clay for this class. I've had students use generic polymer clay brands and their sushi doesn't work as it can't hold detail like higher-quality brands do. I use and recommend Sculpey Premo because of its high quality--however, Sculpey Souffle is also high-quality but is softer, so your learner might find it easier to work with. · Colors I’d Recommend: White, black, dark green, light green, orange, pink · Sculpting tools--a basic set is fine. We will use a needle tool and a cutting tool most. (If you don't have any tools yet, I'd recommend this well-priced set: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VDQ74BB/) · Steel Scraper: This is one tool I use a lot while creating my sushi, but it’s not always associated with polymer clay--it usually comes in pottery toolkits. If you don’t have one, I’d strongly recommend getting one--or something like it--if you can. · Rolling tool (an acrylic roller works best, but you can also use a glass cup!) · Four popsicle/craft sticks (for helping us roll out clay evenly) · Isopropyl Alcohol and Paper Towels (I like to cut mine into (4) squares, to conserve a bit :)) OR Baby Wipes · Adequate working space; possibly a cover for your keyboard--I cover mine because I have to work so close to my laptop. · Cookie sheet, Foil, & an Oven to bake our creations after class! OPTIONAL, BUT RECOMMENDED: · Glaze for after baking (I use Sculpey Satin glaze on parts of my sushi, as well as the plate, and chopsticks.)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 15 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
We won’t be using an oven in class, but students might need oversight and help when baking their pieces after class.

IMPORTANT NOTE AS OF AUGUST 2022: I was accepted into a graduate program and have begun to pursue my MA--and it's keeping me extremely busy! I apologize for not being able to run live classes for the time being. :( I will continue to run my flex...
