Many of my classes here on OutSchool were inspired by a childhood obsession of mine and this one is no exception! I’ve been working with polymer clay since I was seven years old. I love tiny things, so I absolutely love making miniatures! I’m so excited to share my passion for miniatures with your learner(s)!
No official homework, as this is a one-time class. However, students are encouraged to continue to independently practice and experiment with polymer clay for their own enjoyment.
ESSENTIALS: · Polymer Clay · Whatever brand you prefer (Sculpey, Fimo, etc.). I use and recommend Sculpey Premo because of its high quality--however, Sculpey Souffle is also high-quality but is softer, so your learner might find it easier to work with. · You can choose whatever colors you’d like for your cupcakes! I’d recommend choosing a color for the “wrappers” and a couple colors for frosting(s) and sprinkles, as well as having tan or brown ready for the tops. · Sculpting tools--a basic set is fine. (If you don't have any tools yet, I'd recommend this well-priced set: · An old toothbrush or other texturing tool--like a thick paintbrush or a crumpled piece of foil (to texture the tops) · Liquid clay OR a small cup of water (for the third type of frosting) · Isopropyl Alcohol and Paper Towels (I like to cut mine into (4) squares, to conserve a bit :)) OR Baby Wipes · Adequate working space; possibly a cover for your keyboard--I cover mine because I have to work so close to my laptop. · Cookie sheet, Foil, & an Oven to bake our creations after class! OPTIONAL: · Glaze for after baking (I use Sculpey Gloss glaze on my cupcakes.)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
We won’t be using an oven in class, but students might need oversight and help when baking their pieces after class.
