Let's Make Lunch Together! Japanese Rice Balls for Preschool and Kindergarten
Class experience
Most young children are curious about the kitchen, and want to help out. This class is a way for children to prepare food without the danger of knives or hot pans. We'll add our favorite ingredients to our rice and using our hands, mix it together to make tasty rice balls. Then we can eat them together and talk about what foods we put into our rice balls. Along the way we will learn the names of traditional Japanese rice ball ingredients. However, students aren't expected to use them....
Students will practice motor skills by shaping a rice ball. Students will be more aware of their food by making choices and incorporating them into their rice ball.
I am a proficient Japanese speaker, and I lived in Japan for many years. One of my favorite parts of living in Japan was eating Japanese food every day, and learning how to make it at home. Japan is known for cute things, as well as simple yet beautiful food. Therefore, in addition to guiding sensory play I am able to share a bit of Japanese culture with learners. I encourage personal expression from students. That is why I let them choose their own ingredients. I also teach with upbeat energy, which makes the lesson fun for kids!
Bowl with cold water Plastic wrap - optional cooked rice your preferred ingredients, chopped finely. Examples include fish, minced meat, egg, seaweed, sesame seeds, pickled ginger, or minced vegetables.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
-Please have cooked rice available before the lesson. Rinse the rice before cooking it to make the rice more sticky. -Students will be picking up rice with their hands, so please make sure the rice is cooled down! -Parents may need to prepare their child's preferred ingredients ahead of time (i.e. chop vegetables, open a can of tuna)
**At this time I am unable to teach long-term courses. However, I do offer flex classes for hiragana and katakana, and if you are interested in learning kanji I can create a kanji flex course. I am also able to teach any of the food classes upon...
