Class Experience

From a very early age Japanese children learn to "eat with their eyes". Parents often prepare colorful, healthy and delicious lunches for their children with fanciful touches to delight all senses. A variety of vegetables, protein and carbs are artfully arranged in just the right portions in a bento box. In this class we will teach students how to make their own bento lunch and introduce classic bento recipes and simple elements through the use of 5 colors: rice balls with a personality, Japanese omelet, hot dog octopus, fresh vegetables and fruit. Students will learn some Japanese words and manners. Lunchtime will never be the same. "Itadakimasu!" Let's Eat!

Learning Goals

The class starts off with a fun and educational slide presentation introducing Japan, the Japanese lunchbox, and sensibilities as well as simple nutrition concepts. Children will mold rice balls with cute features, create edible creatures, measure ingredients, and attractively arrange all the contents to fit into a container (or bento box). Students will learn what good portion size is for the age group, and the value of eye appeal.

Parental Guidance
Parents with young children are encouraged to assist their child in tasks like cutting and boiling water. When cooking with a stove and/or a knife is required, students with adult supervision can complete the cooking either during the class or after the class has ended. When a recipe calls for the use of a stove, students under the age of 12 need to have an adult on the premises. If the parent or guardian does not plan on being on the premises, please send us a message. Please note that the class duration may extend depending on how the cooking progresses.
