In this class, students will explore the world of printmaking by learning to make their own rubber stamps! Rubber stamps are a small-scale version of a printmaking practice known as linocut. Learners don’t need to come to the class with any previous arts or crafts skills, but being an avid doodler may be a plus. Each week, a different step of the stamp making process will be taught, and students will follow along to make their very own stamp. Please be sure to look at the learner supply list...
I have been using carving tools to create art and other useful objects for the majority of my life. I am a DIY enthusiast, and I believe that encouraging children to combine creativity and tool skills helps them tackle their own DIY projects later on in life.
Students will need a stamp carving kit. This kit should include the following items: A stamp carving tool with a variety of cutting tips Rubber stamp block(s), preferably in 4”x6” An ink pad If you are having a hard time finding a stamp carving kit, please message me! I’d be happy to provide a few options that are around $20, and will allow your student to grow creatively as their skills progress. Additionally, students will need tracing paper, printer paper (or any other blank paper) and a pencil.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Stamp making tools are sharp implements, and students should be capable of handling them with minimal supervision. I will do my best to stop students from using tools in improper ways, but will be unable to physically stop them. Safety always comes first when using these tools.
