1-2 hours per week. Students should review the materials I place in the classroom in between classes. This will include some printables to color and read (no more than 1-3 pages), as well as games and video, that I have created and will provide.
Assessment
I will not formally give assessment unless a parent asks, however, I will let parents know if their learner is not ready for this class or beyond it.

Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - Kindergarten
In this class, students will learn how to read English using both Phonics and Whole Language methods. By combining these, a student will feel confident quickly, while also feeling confident when they come across unknown words. I will give an easy approach to some of the tricky parts of English.

In each class we will sing, learn letter names, letter sounds, and begin putting those letter sounds into words. We will also have some classes that involve a hands-on activity or game to help with learning... or to reward hard work! After each class, I will make available videos and printable work that should be reviewed by the student throughout the week.

Our weeks will consist of 3 days of in-class learning. On day one of the week, we will be introduced to new letters, letter blends, and sight words. Students will have time to practice and read. On day two of the week, we will review what we learned, have time to read and write, and have fun with letters. On day three of the week, we will again review, have our reading time, and do a letter based activity.

Each class does build off the previous class, so attending classes is important to the learning process. If a student misses a class due to illness or other situation, I will send instructions for the parent to assist the student. Each class builds off the previous class and there will be time to review in the following class, but attendance and review is key to learning! With hard work, students will be able to go from not knowing letters to reading paragraphs during this 20 week course!

Prerequisites-
Students will be learning to read, so the understanding of written English is not necessarily needed, however, learners will need to understand verbal English. Students also should be able to be attentive during the class duration. Though this class is a "relaxed" format, it is still important to have participation in class, and out of class.

Requirements-
To really learn the concepts of English, students will need to review the materials I give them between classes, preferably daily. Parents will need to be available to assist them. While I am the teacher, parents will need to take an active role in making sure students review what is learned in class. The daily review time does not need to be lengthy but does need to be consistent. As I will be providing worksheets for print, a printer or way to print will be needed, however, if this is not possible please reach out to me and I can send a picture of the worksheet to be reviewed on a device.

Weekly Subscription Class-
Please note this class is a multi-day class that will have a start and end date, however, it can be paid as a weekly subscription. Students will need to be enrolled prior to the start date and then billed weekly. Please note, there are no options to unsubscribe and subscribe again.

Please Note- This class is NOT a 1:1 class and will need a minimum of 3 learners to run the class, however, I am available to do a 1:1 class, please reach out for more information.

Learning Goals

Students will learn the ability to read letters, know their sounds, understand letter blends, identify some sight words, sound out words phonetically, and begin to read.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Learning to read takes patience and will not happen overnight. It also takes some effort at home and I encourage parents to actively read to their kiddos, along with reviewing what we do in class. I will send a list of ways parents can assist their learners during our class and have ideas for enrichment as we go along. Any questions, please let me know.
Supply List
Learners should have paper, pencils, and crayons (or markers) at each class. We may not use them each class but often learners enjoy writing the letters they learn. We will also have craft times, which will be super easy and simple crafts, where most of everything can be found around the home!
Language of Instruction
English
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been a teacher on Outschool since 2020 and I teach on 2 additional online platforms. I have a biology background, however, I studied US and World History for 3 years in college, as well as 2 years of Chinese. I have also trained in a non-credited format, for many years, with an author and speaker who specializes in teaching children character qualities.

I have always enjoyed teaching. My first teaching position was in Moscow, Russia, teaching English as a second language. Since then, I’ve taught in various settings which include a cooperative, a preschool, and as a tutor in the areas of math, science, and English. I also am a homeschool mom and have taught my kids everything from how to read to algebra!

I have taught this class to different groups at a cooperative and in a preschool, for both ELA and ESL students. I enjoy teaching a subject or principle and including different areas of study along with the original idea.
