US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
In this ongoing weekly class, learners will review their letter sounds, listen for the sounds in 3 letter words, explore cvc words and learn about word families. This class will nurture and develop the foundational skills students need to decode simple words and learn early sight words. In this class we will explore ways to read, make and write simple words. This class is for learners who have a good understanding on their letter sounds, and is a great follow up class for students who have completed the ABC Alphabet club class. Every week we will explore and create simple words by looking at the letter sounds in the words. We will learn how to look carefully at a word and break down the letter sounds (sound out the words), and explore how to create simple words by combining letter sounds that we know. We will also begin to explore some of the most common sight words that we encounter as readers, and build up a collection words that are meaningful for us as readers, and that we may encounter as we read. This class is a place for learners to explore new words and feel success as they build their reading skills.
Learning Goals
Every week students will practice sounding out simple words, identifying letter sounds at the start of words and building CVC words. We will also learn some high-frequency words, that are words that your learner will come across regularly as a reader. These are words that appear frequently in text, and help young readers grow in confidence and skill when they can easily identify them. Not all high-frequency words are easily decodable, so it is important that young readers have the opportunity to learn these words independently.
1) Every week throughout this course we will build our reading skills as we identify and build phonics and letter sounds to make words.
2) We will add to students Personal Dictionaries as we slowly learn those high-frequency words, that readers will experience frequently in words.
Sight words that we will explore every week:

Parental Guidance
During class we will use letters from the handouts that I will post in the classroom. You are encouraged to cut these letters out in advance of class if your student needs support using scissors, or you can assist / supervise your student during this part of the activity.
Supply List
In this weekly 'Little Learners - Let's Learn to Read' class, activity sheets will be provided within the classroom the day before the class. Students are asked to print out the resources and bring them to class. Every week we will use scissors, glue, and crayons. We often use playdoh in class too, but please let me know if this is not an engaging activity for your student and I will adapt the activities. A small whiteboard with markers, is not essential but recommended as students begin to mark make and explore writing their works. Please contact me if you do not have access to a printer as I am always able to offer alternative ways for your student to participate if you cannot access the printed materials. Depending on the weekly activity I may also request that you bring simple household materials such as rice, dried beans or shaving foam to class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
