Class Experience

Start of your German language journey with the right guidance to high German pronunciation, literature, culture and fun!

Start of your German journey with the right guidance to high German pronunciation, literature, culture and fun! This course is for total beginners of the German language.

Like all my courses, this class we will lean heavily on the natural language immersion model. Students will have fun learning a wide range of basic German vocabulary and phrases. They will also study important cultural, geographical and historical concepts related to Germany and the German language. The focus in this class will be on language comprehension and taking any fear of becoming confident German communicators from the start as well as repeating high German (no accent) after me and setting the ground work for correct and native-like pronunciation. At the end of the course your student will be able to carry short conversations in German, introduce him or herself to their peers, comprehend basic conversational concepts, and if ready hold a mini presentation in German.

Being a native speaker I have found that in teaching German the most efficient and most natural approach is the language immersion model. The students will hear me speak a lot of German and will have fun repeating a lot of phrases after me. We will initially focus on comprehension and then move to reading, writing and first grammatical concepts to understand German sentence structure. Your scholar will not notice how much he or she is learning while having fun!

I am a very compassionate, encouraging and fun loving teacher and it is a joy to continuously see my students gain confidence in their speaking ability and pronunciation. Highlight of my month is always hearing formerly shy students confidently holding accent free presentations at the end of the semester!

About me: I have obtained my BA in Linguistics from a German University (Universitaet Hamburg) and my MA from Regent University (U.S.). I have been tutoring and teaching in various classroom and private settings for the past 20 years - including language institutes, public charter schools and private schools. I am also in the pool of adjunct faculty for my local community college and hold an online teaching certificate from Brandman University.

I speak high German (no dialect) and enjoy hearing my students develop an accent-free German, naturally by listening to me speak and by hearing themselves repeat German phrases till they become natural to them.

Every class will begin with a review of the previous class. We will practice and reinforce what we learnt before we go into the new material. I am also a big advocate of team work and hope to begin small group projects in this class already to help students develop positive and mutually encouraging relationships with each other.

I'm looking forward to seeing you in my class soon!
(Ich freue mich dich bald kennenzulernen!! )

Auf Wiedersehen,
Nancy

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a native German adjunct faculty at my local university and spend most of my time teaching college students. I teach simply because I love teaching, especially my mother language German! I believe German is such a wonderful language. Apart from that I am convinced exploring new cultures of the world is simply a lot of fun. One of my greatest joys is to spark an interest in your students to visit Germany or German speaking countries one day and apply their language skills.

I believe, especially for younger students, learning a language at home is the perfect environment to relax and feel at ease as we practice pronunciation.

I have been hybrid-homeschooling my own children and love that it allows them the freedom to develop and pursue their interests and skills to the maximum. Since my children and I are 'language nerds' (: they study Spanish, Mandarin, Norwegian and French in addition to speaking German as well and love it! In college I also studied Swahili, Hausa and Twi and was part of various language research groups. Needless to say I love anything language related and drawing parallels between various languages to enhance the learning.

In my free time I love to study music, listen to music and make music. I also teach piano and music theory and have been part of orchestras in Germany and the U.S.
