Let's Learn Calculus

In this 12-week online course, students will begin learning the first half of calculus. Students will begin learning limits and derivatives, which are the topics included in the first half of a calculus class.
Class

What's included

12 live meetings
11 in-class hours
Homework
1-2 hours per week. Worksheets will be provided each week for students to practice the topics discussed in class. They will be reviewed for correctness before the next class. Homework will not be required, but strongly encouraged.
Assessment
Assessment will be take-home assignments offered at the half way point and at the end to ensure students have a good enough understanding to move to the next level of calculus. They will not be required, but strongly encouraged.
Grading
The grades offered will be sufficient or insufficient. This will be based off of their performance in class and whether or not the student has the skills required to move to the next level.

Class Experience

US Grade 10 - 12
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this class, students will become proficient in calculus topics. The topics covered will consist of limits, continuity, differentiability, and derivatives. Each week the topics will build off of the week before. Each lesson will focus on a specific calculus topic that will be thoroughly explained during class time with practice problems incorporated throughout class. Students will be offered optional homework assignments as extra practice for them to ensure their understanding of the topic. I will teach each topic with a combination of powerpoint lessons and practice problems that the students can work on during class. My style of teaching is to engage the students as much as possible and to encourage critical thinking. I like to incorporate multiple styles of teaching to make sure I can accommodate multiple learning styles. My teaching style is hybrid with a mix of instructor and student centered approaches. I would like my students to participate throughout class either by asking questions or discussing what they've learned during class. Students will have the opportunity to work in groups or individually for the practice problems covered in class and will be encouraged to ask questions to ensure they have understood the material covered.

Our tentative schedule will be as follows

Week 1: Limits - Graphically and Numerically

Week 2: Limits - Analytically

Week 3: Limits - Analytically

Week 4: Continuity

Week 5: Intermediate Value Theorem

Week 6: Limit Definition of a Derivative

Week 7: Rule of Derivatives (Power Rule, Product Rule, Quotient Rule)

Week 8: Rules of Derivatives (Chain Rule, Trig Rules)

Week 9: Implicit Differentiation

Week 10: Tangent Line

Week 11: Average Rate of Change vs Instantaneous Rate of Change

Week 12: Review of Main Concepts
Learning Goals
Students will be proficient in the topics discussed in class and have the required understanding to transition into the second half of calculus.
