In this 5-week course, students will learn about important figures and events in Black/African-American history while learning the purpose of telling these stories.
Class experience
Students in this course will learn about an important part of Black history every week through a presentation of the course material. They will be able to ask questions and be given time to discuss with students. Classes are twice a week for an hour. This class is taught in English.
Students will not only know more about Black history but will be able to connect black history to current black life. Students will gain an appreciation of Black history and culture and will be more accepting of other cultures and their differences. Students will improve writing skills through the presentation at the end of the 5 weeks. Students will improve communication skills by communicating with peers in discussion groups, presenting information discussed in their groups, and presenting an individual paper during the last class period. Students will learn of the importance of the study of history and sharing historical knowledge.
I am a graduate of The University of Maryland College Park with a Bachelors in History with a Concentration in African American History. Additionally I minored in Education with a Social Studies focus and took multiple classes focused on teaching students about history, including deeper/darker topics.

We will be talking about dark parts of Black American history; including lynchings, slavery, sexual assault, police brutality, etc. Please use your own discretion when registering your student for this class and ask yourself if they would be mature enough to learn about these topics.
