Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I am Debi! I am new to Outschool. I am an Educational Assistant and help a wide variety of special education students and specialize in reading. I have ADHD, dyslexia and dyscalculia so I have a unique understanding of students with learning disabilities and the different methods we need to learn. I also have my diploma in Animal Health Sciences and Graphic Design. I volunteer as the Eco Teacher at my child's school 2 to 3 times a month where I teach 20 to 26 students.
For the past 2 years I have been the Lead Eco Teacher at my children's school. I love every moment of it and getting to share my love for the environment with the students. During the course of the year we monitor our schools green practices we have put in place and brainstorm new ways to reduce our schools carbon footprint. We also work on several Eco Projects like providing a special recycling station for items not normally collected in our blue boxes, creating inviting and helpful habitats for the animals that share our school grounds and we help educate the other students in our school about good eco practices and how they can make a difference with one small change at a time. Locally to me I offer to other schools in class Eco STEM workshops, The option to be able to teach online and provide these workshops and lessons to student all over the world is just amazing. Each student is different and from each of them I learn something new each time, gain a new perspective and I can't wait to meet each and every student.
I specialize in eco, environmental science and nature, I also have a passion for puppetry (Jim Henson was my hero) art, anything DIY, harry potter, gardening and farming. Another thing that may surprise you is I am an adult that has ADHD and I wear it loud and proud. I had an amazing support system as a teen that helped me learn how to be a fully functioning adult and taught me how to use my ADHD as a superpower. I am very creative, silly, energetic, imaginative and think outside the box. I have a huge passion for teaching, the environment and love to see students discover new things and get real enjoyment out of it. Learning for me always had to be interactive, fun, engaging, hands on and thats what I like to offer to my students.
In my spare time I love to be outdoors with my family. We spend a lot of time in the forests near our house as we are very fortunate to live near the green belt of Ontario and are only a few hours drives from Ontario's amazing boreal forest region. We enjoy the forests by hiking, camping, fishing and bike riding. When we are not outside we are crafting or doing something DIY. My children are a lot like me, they want to soak up as much information as they can about a subject and try every new thing they see.
I can't wait to see your child in my classroom and what amazing things they will discover!
