Let's Jam: Create Comics and Collaborate With New Friends (Ages 10-13)

A jam comic is a short 2- 6 panel comic strip that is created by more than one artist in short period of time. Each week, learners will collaborate to draw a short comic strip with a beginning, middle,and end using a common story prompt.

Class Experience

I am a professional illustrator and self published comic book creator. I have published thirteen individual comic books, and have just completed one full graphic novel. I was a fourth grade teacher for eleven years. I currently teach art classes to children at the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, South Carolina. You can find my comic books and illustration work at
Learners devices must be compatible with the Zoom whiteboard feature. Learners should use a mouse or stylus for drawing on the digital whiteboard. Students may use their finger to draw. However, a mouse or stylus is more enjoyable. We will create the jam comic using the whiteboard feature in Zoom. No additional art supplies are needed.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Students will draw the jam comic using the whiteboard feature in Zoom. Students must be able to draw on the whiteboard in the Zoom classroom. Please test technology before class to be sure the whiteboard works on your learner's device. A stylus or mouse is highly recommended.
