6 live meetings
6 in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. In between sessions, students will be asked to organize their work by rewriting class notes and adding or subtracting details they like or dislike. Students are encouraged to send me their "in between class drafts" for feedback. While this is optional for each student, I have designed the class as a one (or two)-on-one (or two) dynamic specifically in order that I will be able to give your child the time they deserve to do their very best in their writing endeavor. Students will come to the following session with any questions or new ideas they may have noticed during the rewriting and organizing process. This does not have to take long and will depend entirely upon whether the student changes or adds to his or her ideas in between classes (which is perfectly fine!).Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
Creative writing can be compared to planting a beautiful garden. In this 6-session class, students will use the story "seeds:" character, setting, conflict/climax and resolution, to "grow" their own creative "short story garden". In our final session, we will discuss and reflect on the challenges and rewards involved in creating our own stories. We will also review useful writing strategies to encourage students to continue their writing endeavor on their own. In Session 1, we will plant the "character seed." Students will explore and develop one or more characters that we will put to work in our final stories. In Session 2, we will plant the "setting seed." Students will be encouraged to let their imaginations discover and design the setting or settings for their stories. In Session 3, we will plant the "conflict/climax seeds" through which our characters must travel. In Session 4, we will plant the "resolution seed" as students decide how their characters will solve or resolve the chosen conflict and climax. In Session 5, we will plant and water all the seeds in our "short story garden," to admire the harvest beauty as we read our final story aloud. We will use Session 6 for review of material learned, as well as a "buffer time," as students frequently spend more than one session working on certain of the various elements. Please note that because this class meets on numerous and various days, it is expected that students may have one or more schedule conflicts. If this is the case with your family, please feel free to message me and we will work together to create a make-up session or sessions to fit your family's schedule. :-) Working one on one through a relaxed, fun and open discussion format, students will have plenty of time to gather "idea seeds" as they explore their own imaginations. Together we will learn, review and apply the "seeds" of the short story to create our final "Short Story Garden." Students need not possess prior knowledge of story elements (or gardening!) to learn from and enjoy this class. BUT, the success of any final story will depend on student efforts between meetings. Students will be asked to keep idea notes during class and to complete minimal, but crucial, rewriting of these class notes in between sessions. This, in order to really get to know and understand their characters. Rewriting, or editing, is also a great way to practice and play with various writing techniques in order to bring out the "hidden writer" in all of us. Students will be encouraged to share these notes with me via the classroom messaging for teacher editing and suggestion purposes. Although I will offer my professional opinions, and assist with rewrites, I am acting as a guide through the writing process. Ultimately, in creative writing, the author has the final say, and in this class, your child is the author! I look forward to meeting your child in the "Short Story Garden."
Learning Goals
Students will learn four elements of the short story: characters, setting, conflict/climax and resolution. Students will also be encouraged to trust in their own ideas and their own imaginations which in turn will build their creative skills and confidence. Students will combine the elements of the short story to create their own final body of written work.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Ashford University
Hello! I have been teaching and working with children for over 25 years, including homeschooling my own daughter! I have a Master's degree in education, with a concentration in family and community studies, and a Bachelor's degree in journalism. I have taught students aged 4 to 16. I have taught both mainstream and Special Education curriculum. I have worked with students in classroom settings where academics are targeted, in home settings where learning and life skills are targeted, and in a martial arts capacity where physical fitness is combined with self-discipline, focus and team work. Most recently I have applied my experience to an online ESL (English as a Second Language) setting where target academic goals are combined with effective communications skills and the fun of online learning itself!
My expertise includes writing, editing, grammar, spelling and thoroughly enjoying witnessing children having fun learning! Although I enjoy teaching in general, I am passionate about guiding children to recognize their own talents and skills. In my classroom, I prioritize individual growth and personal confidence. Without confidence, even the brightest child can struggle! By creating a learning environment that is both relaxed and supportive, I have personally witnessed so many children discover that what they once thought was impossible or "too hard," is suddenly conquerable and even fun! Once fear and apprehension are removed, children become excited to learn and explore new things. It is my job, (my goal!) to help your child realize the strengths he or she has within, and to use these strengths, not only in our classroom, but also in any challenge they face in life. So, as we practice writing, or spelling or grammar, (or even karate!) in our classroom, your child will also have gained a new sense of their own abilities which he or she will carry with them for a lifetime.
When I am away from the classroom, I enjoy spending time with my husband, my 2 dogs and my four cats! I enjoy seeing what new foods are ready to pick in my vegetable garden or what weeds need to be plucked from my flower gardens! I love reading and frequently have more than one book going at a time! I also enjoy writing letters to friends and family. Most of all I enjoy checking in with my own daughter and granddaughter who live all the way out in California!
I look forward to meeting your child soon, and working with your family to provide individual attention in a one-on-one OR group setting. I will always do my best to personalize our class curriculum to meet the needs of your child. The most destructive limitations we face are those we place on ourselves. Let's break through those barriers and begin a new adventure!
