Class Experience

*I will no longer be teaching this class on Outschool and the last flex version will start June 20th. If you are not ready to join yet, you can still sign up and have access to the class videos for a month after the class ends.*
Learners should have a good grasp on letter identification and sounds. I will use the Letterland Phonics program to quickly review the letter id/sound, but this skill will not specifically be taught in this class. This class will focus on taking individual letter sounds and putting them together to form a short word. I will use Letterland Phonics to assist in teaching this skill. It will help your learner if they have previous exposure to the Letterland characters, but this is not required.

Each class I will rotate words taught, so your learner can continue to practice if they repeat the class.

This class will build on Letterland character id and sounds. We will form short CVC (consonant/vowel/consonant) words, such as cat, hot, sun, leg. Together we will sound out each sound and work on blending the sounds together to form a word. We will also practice writing the letters to form the words. We will discuss the difference between real and nonsense words.
Learners will visually be able to see the letters, hear the sounds and use action tricks to relate to the sounds/words.
This class will be structured in the I do, we do, you do format. I will model how form and blend the words. Then we will continue to practice together. At the end learners will have a chance to sound out and write CVC words on their own.

I will loosely use the child-friendly phonics program, Letterland. Each letter will be connected to a particular character and we will use songs about these letters/characters to enhance learning.

"Letterland was created to teach phonics using a story-based approach. The story logic engages students leading to long term retention of concepts. What's more, Letterland is wonderfully multi-sensory. It activates every learning channel through music, actions, alliteration, movement, song, art, games and role-play."
I have taught the initial Letterland course on Outschool and the learners have loved it. Feel free to check out the other class for parent reviews.
I taught Kindergarten and first grade for four years using the Letterland program. It is AMAZING! It makes learning fun and is a way for your child to be introduced to letters/phonics where they can relate and remember what they are leaning. They quickly will be singing the songs, identifying characters and reading short CVC words.
