55 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
Students will go on a simulated whale watch. From boarding the boat, to leaving the harbor and heading into open ocean. On the way "out to the whales", we will play a game to learn about what to look for and learn about why whales return every spring, summer, and fall. Then when we spot our first whales, I will use videos and explanations to help kids "experience" a whale watch. They will get to see some of the exciting interactions that we see during the summer. (This will be one of the trips where we tell people they are spoiled because they got to see so many excited things!) We will play a game on the way "back from the whales" as well as learn about what we can all do to help protect the environment they live in. Students will have a chance to ask questions throughout the class. If there is a topic they are particularly interested in, we can spend a few minutes with it (perhaps we can create a new class to address it as well).
Learning Goals
Students will learn what species are seen on a whale watch and how we identify them. They will understand why whales are migrating and when. Scientists identify individual whales, so students will also meet some of my favorite whales that I see year after year. Whales have been my passion since I was a little kid as well. I also hope kids are inspired to find their passions and think about how to incorporate that into their lives!
