Advanced Level
In this one-time class, utilizing a Valentine's Day theme, learners will be introduced to two different addition strategies, counting on and using a number line, for solving addition facts involving one- and two-digit numbers. The class focus will be to solve addition facts within 20. In this class, learners will understand important math vocabulary, including add (combine) and equal (total); learners will also be able to name and recognize the symbols used in addition equations. This class will follow an "I Do, We Do, You Do" instructional method, where I will begin instruction by teaching a mini lesson. Then learners will work together using the strategies learned in the mini lesson to solve addition problems as they play a game. Lastly learners will practice the strategies that they learned in the lesson to solve addition problems independently. This course is appropriate for Advanced Kindergarten and 1st grade learners.* *Prior Knowledge: Learners should be able to add within 10 AND recognize, write, and count numbers 0-20.* **There is a printable for use during class. Learners should be familiar with a few basic Zoom features to be successful in this course, including how to unmute*. *I do not mute learners unless there is background noise that is distracting to other learners. I will give an initial warning before having to mute any learners, but if the background noise continues I will have to mute a learner, they may unmute themselves when they would like to speak and then mute themselves again after sharing what they want to say.
Learning Goals
Students will develop strategies for adding one- and two-digit numbers within 20.
