Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
In this class students will learn about Native American tribal groups. We will discuss the differences between tribes and regional changes that created those differences. Each class will involve some lesson time, with images and discussions, and some craft time.

Week 1 - Eastern Woodlands

We'll discuss the first tribes to have contact with the English upon their arrival at Jamestown. We'll talk about the style of housing, food, and crafts of the Virginia Coastal tribes.

Draw a European's observation of the Powhatan Tribe and create a three sisters project.

Week 2 - Mound Builders

This week we'll look at the ancient Mound Builders and what modern tribes they developed into. How did their housing change after Europeans came to North America? Did they really disappear?

Make art inspired by the copper plate art and pottery of the Mississippian people

Week 3 - Midwest Tribes

Let's talk about tribes that live where it gets really cold! How did they survive the long winters? What did their houses look like to keep them warm? Did they eat different foods than the other groups we've discussed?

Make a canoe or quillwork project

Week 4 - Southwest Tribes

In our final week, we'll learn about the Pueblo and other tribes of the Southwest. How are their houses differ from the other groups we've looked at? How did they survive in a desert?

Make paper bag dream art inspired by Pueblo pottery.
